THE MUMMY May Be Chasing Tom Cruise – DENIED

Update: Deadline now reports that reps for Cruise “adamantly” deny that he’s in talks with Universal for The Mummy or any other monster project, as he’s currently filming Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, followed by Mission: Impossible 6, which begins shooting in August.

_______________

Original story follows:

Tom Cruise may soon be spending time with a few Universal Monsters. Specifically — at least, to start — The Mummy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cruise is in talks to take a role in the upcoming revival of Universal’s classic monster series of films, although it’s still early and no details are available. Rumor is that his involvement would cross over into other films besides The Mummy, leading some to speculate he could be the new Van Helsing.

Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan were brought on board the project last summer, developing a shared universe for the Universal monster library to culminate in a crossover/team-up/mashup film that includes all of them. Kurtzman is set to direct The Mummy and will produce along with Morgan and Sean Daniel. Script is by Jon Spaihts. This is not a continuation of the franchise starring Brendan Fraser, although it pulls from the same original source material.

Universal’s executive VP of production Jon Mone and director of development Jay Polidoro will oversee the project for the studio.
