NOTES FROM THE COSMIC SHORE: Now With Double The Science!
Heather French and Timothy Harvey once again use the wonders of modern technology (Science!) to bring you Notes from The Cosmic Shore, SciFi4Me’s podcast about the new COSMOS: A Spacetime Odyssey series. And not only do they bring you their thoughts on this week’s episode, but also on last week’s which, you may have noticed, is suspiciously absent from the site, due to reasons of various kinds.
So! You get two podcasts for the price of one today, and honestly, isn’t that worth the wait?
… anyway.
We start off with this week’s episode, “Deeper, Deeper, Deeper Still”, and ride along with Neil deGrasse Tyson in the Ship of the Imagination to the alien world of the photosynthesis factory inside a leaf, and deep into the heart of the Sun. We’ll look at atoms and Wolfgang Pauli’s theories about the neutrino travel and deep under the Earth’s surface, to a place where scientists have built a vast detector to observe that tiniest of particles. There may be a few digressions along the way…
Then take a step back in time to hear us discuss the previous episode, “Hiding in the Light”, where Neil guides us through the history and importance of light to the development of science. We’ll look at the work of the Chinese philosopher Mozi and the Arabic scientist Ibn al-Haytham, who was one of the first to use the scientific method and whose work would pave the way for the telescope. Then we’ll follow the path of Newton and Hershel to Joseph Fraunhofer, a man whose work was the beginnings of something incredibly dear to our host Dr. Tyson… Astrophysics.
COSMOS: A Spacetime Odyssey, hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson, airs on 10 Fox networks including FOX and FX Sundays at 9:00PM Eastern/8:00PM Central, and Mondays on the National Geographic Channel .
