Happy Geek Pride Day!

It’s a wonderful day to be a geek. Yeah, there are no ticker-tape parades (that I know of, at least), but today is OUR day. For those of you that don’t know why today is Geek Pride Day, you should check out this week’s Geekly. (Bonus, do you know what is going on today? If you need a little more inspiration, sit back with a glass of scotch to this speech. It’s particularly moving and epic.) Regardless, it’s time to celebrate the geekiness! ‘How might I do that?,’ you may ask, ‘how am I supposed to celebrate the awesomeness that is my everyday state?’ I respond simply: with even more awesomeness!

For one, not only is today Geek Pride Day, it is also Towel Day. Do you know where your towel is? Of course, this year, there’s even more awesomeness and you need look no further than Wired’s GeekMom Blog for 42 Occurences of The Number 42 in Pop Culture. It’s epic.

I know the war rages on between the Warsies and the Trekkies (I’m sorry, TrekkERs…) but today is the 35th birthday of the Star Wars franchise. In honor of the day why not break out the ol’ trilogy (or the new trilogy, or all six) or enjoy some Fanboys (see above reference in parentheses)?

If you haven’t seen it yet, the movie is hilarious and has cameos of everyone from Carrie Fisher to Kevin Smith, Billy Dee Williams to William Shatner.

Then again, if you prefer a quieter form of entertainment, there’s always books to be read! Now, we’ve got plenty available in either our library (for free) or our Amazon store that are pretty awesome and there’s always the classics (think the Song of Ice and Fire books, The Lord of the Rings, the Harry Potter books), or you can always grab a few books about geek culture. I just finished Everything I Need to Know I Learned from Dungeons and Dragons by Shelly Mazzanoble (review coming soon) and just purchased Leaving Mundania by Lizzie Stark.

Of course, if you can get it organized, there’s always the D&D Next Playtest or other tabletop games. Then again, you can always enjoy some video games with friends if you can’t get them in a room together. Diablo III is still enjoying its post-release buzz and older games are never a bad option.

And, of course, there’s always YouTube to kill some time. Check out the SciFi4Me YouTube page for awesome videos from conventions, interviews, the back issues of Comic Con Carne and more. I’m also planning on catching up with Geek and Sundry, geek goddess Felicia Day’s channel.

1. The right to be even geekier.
2. The right to not leave your house.
3. The right to not like football or any other sport.
4. The right to associate with other nerds.
5. The right to have few friends (or none at all).
6. The right to have as many geeky friends as you want.
7. The right to be out of style.
8. The right to be overweight and near-sighted.
9. The right to show off your geekiness.
10. The right to take over the world.

Responsibilities:

1.  Be a geek, no matter what.
2. Try to be nerdier than anyone else.
3. If there is a discussion about something geeky, you must give your opinion.
4. To save and protect all geeky material.
5. Do everything you can to show off geeky stuff as a “museum of geekiness.”
6. Don’t be a generalized geek. You must specialize in something.
7. Attend every nerdy movie on opening night and buy every geeky book before anyone else.
8. Wait in line on every opening night. If you can go in costume or at least with a related T-shirt, all the better.
9. Never throw away anything related to geekdom.
10. Try to take over the world!
