The Geekly with a Twist: May 25th-31st

Do you know where your Towel is? Okay, so, aside from Towel Day and Geek Pride Day, it’s everyone’s favorite day of the week…it’s time for the Geekly! So, onward with the history (and geek festivities)!

May 25th, 1977: Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope opens in theaters. Of course, at the time, it was simply known as Star Wars.

May 25th, 1983: Star Wars Episode VI: The Return of the Jedi opens in theaters nationwide.

May 25th, 2001: Two weeks after the death of the beloved author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, the first Towel Day is celebrated.

May 25th, 2006: The first Geek Pride Day is celebrated in Spain in its current incarnation. It is called Orgullo Friki (“geek pride,” in case you couldn’t guess).

May 25th, 2008: NASA’s Phoenix Mars Lander lands in the arctic plains on the red planet.

May 25th, 2008: The first Geek Pride Day is celebrated in the United States.

May 26th, 1922: Probably the coolest LOTR fanboy ever, Saruman himself (and Dooku, and Dracula, and every voice you ever found amazing in video games) Sir Christopher Lee is born in London.

May 26th, 1971: The titular Priest, Geoffrey Chaucer, and J.A.R.V.I.S. (think about it for a second), Paul Bettany is born in London.

May 29th, 1953: The composer noted for his multitudes of contributions to pop culture (including The Simpsons theme song, the theme to the 1989 Batman, and much of the music for Fable) Danny Elfman is born in Los Angeles, California.

May 30th, 1971: Mariner 9, a deep space probe on a journey to Mars, blasts off from Cape Canaveral.

May 31st, 1961: Back to the Future and Howard the Duck alum, Lea Thompson, is born in Rochester, Minnesota.

And, of course, why not let your geek flag fly with a tasty Twist-y(and extremely energizing) geeky cocktail…the Cotton Bawls Cocktail.

  • Bawls Guarana
  • Cotton Candy
  • Vodka

Detailed instructions are located here, but it’s pretty simple. Fill a glass with cotton candy (do not compact the fluff), mix the vodka and Bawls (pre-chilled), and pour over the candy. It’s beautiful, just saying.

And, of course, we need to Garnish an especially geeky week with some special geek pride…

The beauty that is the Tumblr site Geek Pride sums up the week. I think I’m in love…well, I know I am with much of the first page at the very least.

So, until next week, I’ll say it loud like a battle cry for those of us sucked into our respective video games… GEEK ON!
