The Hollywood Reporter announced yesterday that British actor Simon Pegg could star in the upcoming scifi novel-turned-movie Ready Player One. Pegg, of Hot Fuzz and Star Trek fame, is currently in talks with Warner Brothers and Village Roadshow regarding the role of “Orgen Morrow”.
The forthcoming motion picture will be an adaptation of the best selling novel of the same name, written by Ernest Cline and published in 2011. Taking place in a semi-post-apocalyptic 2044, Ready Player One features a broken and corrupt society in which most people live out their days hooked into the OASIS, a global virtual reality made up of thousands of interconnected worlds.
Teenager Wade Watts is a denizen of the OASIS in the form of his avatar Parzival. He is also a “gunter”, one of the gamers who search for a mythical Easter egg hidden somewhere in the OASIS by its deceased co-founder, James Halliday. The finder of the egg will receive Halliday’s fortune and thus become one of the wealthiest people on Earth. The plot surrounds Wade’s struggles, both real and virtual, as he races to solve Halliday’s puzzling clues and defeat the Big Bad Villains close on his heels.
Pegg’s potential character, listed by The Hollywood Reporter as “Orgen Morrow,” is referred to in the novel as Ogden “The Great and Powerful Og” Morrow, James Halliday’s partner and co-founder of the OASIS as well as a famous philanthropist. Other confirmed actors include Tye Sheridan as Wade Watts, Olivia Cooke as Wade’s ally Samantha Cook/ Art3mis, and Ben Mendelsohn as Wade’s nemesis, Nolan Sorrento.
Warner Brothers purchased the adaptation rights as well as a screenplay from Ernest Cline in June 2010, on the same day that Cline received his publishing deal. The film will be produced by Steven Spielberg and is set to release on March 30, 2018.
Pegg will next feature in Star Trek Beyond, which he also co-wrote. Star Trek Beyond comes to theaters July 22.
