Horror Loses A Legend — RIP George A. Romero

The horror world has lost a legend. George A. Romero, the creator and director of Night of the Living Dead, as well as the following films Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead, has passed away after a short bout with lung cancer. In addition to his most well known work, Romero also produced and directed many other films and television shows, all which have entertained and inspired fans and filmmakers alike. His work with the zombie horror genre earned him the nickname “Godfather of the Dead”.

Romero’s work has helped not only cement the place and reputation of zombies as a common horror monster, it also shaped and defined how we think of zombies. Many filmmakers influenced by Romero have imitated his vision of zombies to one extent or another. Although inspired by his own work, Romero wasn’t a fan of the recent resurgence of zombie films and shows.

Tributes from fans and friends alike have been all over social media. Some who have worked with him talk about his infectious laugh and humor as well as his warm heart. Fans remember the scares and laughs, as well as other aspects of Romero’s films including having people of color in starring roles.

George Romero was born on February 4th, 1940 in the Bronx to a Lithuanian mother and a Cuban father. He was active in film, television, video games, and comics up until his death. He is survived by his third wife, Suzanne Desrocher, and his three children and their families.
