AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Trailer Debuts: Analysis

Analysis and guesswork, really.

_______________

First, we see that some real effort has gone into the effects work, mixing practical and CG effects. The opening shot is one we got in the teaser late last week — Spider-Man diving from a great height (and he’s diving, not falling) with the wind whipping at the costume.

Then we’re into an array of shots showing off Spidey-skills, then the angsty voice-over from Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker.

OK. Let’s look at a few shots. This is by no means any kind of thorough analysis. Just some bare-knuckle quick glances at the trailer to see what there is to be seen. And there’s quite a lot.

0:11 — Peter, sans uniform, on the rooftop, looking like he’s got a big decision to make
0:15 — Spidey saves a NY police officer from getting creamed by a flying NYPD patrol car. In the background, you can see other cars in disarray, indicating that this is in the middle of some conflict. It appears to be Electro in the far background.
0:17 — Peter in a graveyard. This could be where Ben Parker is buried, or it could foreshadow another death we know is coming
0:18 — our first look at the CG “practical world” version of the Rhino. It’s a mechanical suit rather than a biological mutation, and that fits along with some other things we see later in this trailer
0:19 — our first look at the Green Goblin, but it’s not clear if this is Norman or Harry. This suit also looks to be a mechanical enhancement.
0:22 — the Oscorp building; would have been fun to see that in The Avengers

Then a scene between Peter and Gwen Stacy, talking about an incident involving machine guns and being shot at. At 0:44 you can see “Follow the Daily Bugle on Tumblr” on a building in the background. That can be found here, and it includes more clues on what we’re going to see with regard to the mechanical enhancements.

0:50 — our first look at Harry Osborn

And then we get back into the Parker Family Mystery — something with regard to the research being done by Peter’s parents. And it seems that Richard Parker was involved in some project to develop robotics to enhance abilities in humans.

1:15 — Norman Osborn? Walking through a hidden bunker where we see the Octopus arms and Vulture wings, clearly a hint of things to come.
1:23 — Harry is apparently going to be brought into the Green Goblin story early, as we get a look at the lab where Electro was created (see the electric eels?)
1:25 — first look at Green Goblin on his flying surfboard
1:33 — Norman appears to be on his deathbed ordering the death of Spider-Man

Cut to a combat montage, including the usual “This is something I have to do” speech from Parker. More combat to show off the CG and the action. Hints of Electro doing Very Bad Things. And what appears to be the inside of a clock tower, maybe? And Gwen is wearing that outfit in the scene, so…

The end slide “His greatest battle begins” would seem to indicate that this movie is just putting all the pieces in place for ASM3. So the Rhino, Green Goblin, Vulture, and Dr. Octopus are all going to be using Oscorp robotics as they gather together with Electro and the Lizard(?) to form the Sinister Six. Which puts a “real world” spin on many of the origins for these villains, but hopefully it doesn’t mean there are so many evil geniuses working for Oscorp.
