Are People Choosing More Genre?

The People’s Choice Awards were held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles Wednesday night, and the genre was well-represented among the winners.

Among all the award ceremonies that “matter” in the industry, the People’s Choice set is a chance for non-industry participation. Every year, fans get to vote on their favorites among film, television, and music categories. This year, there were fifty-eight total categories. The telecast on CBS was produced by Mark Burnett and hosted by Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs of 2 Broke Girls (and Dennings, of course, can be seen in the Thor movies.)

Organizers say more than 700 million votes were cast.

Among the winners:

  • Iron Man 3 — Favorite Action Movie
  • Gravity — Favorite Dramatic Movie
  • Iron Man 3 — Favorite Movie
  • Despicable Me 2 — Favorite Family Movie
  • The Big Bang Theory — Favorite Network TV Comedy
  • Kaley Cuoco — Favorite Comedic TV Actress
  • Sandra Bullock (Gravity) — Favorite Movie Actress, Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress
  • Sandra Bullock & George Clooney (Gravity) — Favorite Movie Duo
  • Robert Downey, Jr. — Favorite Action Movie Star
  • Joseph Morgan (The Orginals) — Favorite Actor in a New TV Series
  • The Walking Dead — Favorite Cable TV Drama
  • Rick Grimes (The Walking Dead) — Favorite TV Anti-Hero
  • Sam, Dean, Castiel (Supernatural) — Favorite TV Bromance
  • Damon and Elena (The Vampire Diaries) — Favorite On-Screen Chemistry
  • Beauty and the Beast — Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show
  • Ian Somerhalder (The Vampire Diaries) — Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actor
  • Kristin Kreuk (Beauty and the Beast) — Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actress

Downey’s acceptance was accompanied by his channeling of Tony Stark, asking for a spotlight and heroic music as he took the stage to receive his award, after which he proclaimed, “I am Iron Man, and this is for the people.”

Bullock recognized the efforts of the performers and artists/technicians around her: “An actor can’t do what they do without hundreds of amazing people working for them and alongside them. I learned so much this year. I got to work with Melissa McCarthy on ‘The Heat.’ … And on ‘Gravity,’ the nicest people in the world would string me up and leave me there, and I still had an amazing time,” the Oscar-winning actress said.

Besides the overt genre success, there were also genre-adjacent winners we should also recognize: Stana Katic (Favorite Dramatic TV Actress), Sarah Michelle Gellar (Favorite Actress in a New TV Series), Castle (Favorite TV Crime Drama), and Psych (Favorite Cable TV Comedy). Mainly because of the connections these winners have to the genre community, of course.
