The Geekly with a Twist: May 4th-10th

While I know most of you are still reeling from your midnight showings and Marvel movie marathons, it’s time to wake up and smell the Geekly! Onward with the history!

May 4th, 2003: Idaho Gem, the first equine clone, is born. (Bonus fact…he’s a mule.)

May 4th, 2011: The first Star Wars Day celebration is held in Toronto (and across the internet/world). May the Fourth be with you!

May 5th, 1925: John T. Scopes is charged for breaking the Butler Act in Tennessee- that is, he taught Darwin’s theory of evolution. (Bonus fact…the whole thing was a setup. Scopes was approached by businessmen in Dayton, Tennessee to be the defendant because the ACLU was going to finance a case against the Act and its constitutionality. He was actually the football coach and just a substitute teacher.)

May 5th, 1944: Future LOTR actor (he both was Gimli and the voice of Treebeard) as well as world-renowned Shakespearean actor, John Rhys-Davies is born in Ammanford, Wales. (Yet another bonus fact…John Rhys-Davies was actually the tallest member of the Fellowship.)

May 5th, 1961: Alan Shepard becomes the first American in space when he pilots Freedom 7 on a 15 minute sub-orbital flight.

May 6th, 1915: Actor, director, writer, and producer Orson Welles is born in Kenosha, Wisconsin. If you’re not familiar with Welles, he was the man who brought, notably to the SciFi world, the radio broadcast/alien scare The War of the Worlds to life.

May 6th, 1961: One of the men in the elite club of donning the Batsuit, George Clooney is born in Lexington, Kentucky.

May 7th, 1946: Sony is founded in Tokyo. Its original name? Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corp.

May 8th, 1794: Antoine Lavoisier, the chemist who discovered oxygen, is executed by guillotine in Paris.

May 10th, 2011: Microsoft announces its deal to purchase Skype.

In honor of Star Wars Day, let’s Twist it a bit…droid-ish with a C-3PO.

  •  1 part orange juice
  • 1/2 part peach schnapps
  • 1/2 part peppermint schnapps
  • 1 part pineapple juice
  • 1 dash triple sec

Pour all ingredients over crushed ice in a glass and stir. Garnish with mint leaves and enjoy!

And, of course, to Garnish your Geekly, if you haven’t seen it yet, you need to!…TABLETOP!

All of the episodes are over at Geek and Sundry and, of course, you can’t go wrong with Mr. Wil Wheaton.

So, until next week, geek on!
