Tatiana Maslany is the New She-Hulk
The trades are reporting an imminent deal for Tatiana Maslany to play Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk in the upcoming Disney+ series.
Sources tell both Deadline and Variety that Maslany is in talks for the lead role in She-Hulk, one of several series in development for the streaming channel. Those shows also include WandaVision, Loki, and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Earlier this week, it was reported that Kat Coiro will direct several episodes as well as serve as showrunner. Jessica Gao is leading the writers room.
Maslany comes into the project after appearing in HBO’s Perry Mason, but many will know her from her Emmy-winning performance as multiple characters in Orphan Black. That wasn’t her first foray into genre, however. She also had a role on 2030 CE, a series that lasted two years and told the story of a society in which no one lives past the age of thirty. She’s also appeared in The Messengers, Diary of the Dead, Being Erica, and the animated Captain Canuck. She recently returned to her Orphan Black roles for the Serial Box audio production Orphan Black: The Next Chapter.
She-Hulk was created by Stan Lee and artist John Buscema, first appearing in The Savage She-Hulk in February 1980. Her creation was a preemptive move to keep Universal Studios from creating their own derivative character from their license to produce The Incredible Hulk starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno.
The character, lawyer Jennifer Walters, is Bruce Banner’s cousin. After being injured in an attack while pursuing a case, she receives a blood transfusion from Banner and gains the same gamma radiation mutation. However, unlike Hulk’s brute personality, She-Hulk maintains her intelligence and personality. In her various iterations in the Marvel Comics titles, she’s also different from her cousin in that she actually enjoys being big and green. In some stories, she’s even able to control her transformation, but she usually prefers living life as She-Hulk instead of Jennifer. During John Byrne’s run on Sensational She-Hulk, she even broke the fourth wall and realized she was a character in a comic book.
Over time, She-Hulk has been part of the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and A-Force.
Representatives for Marvel and Disney have not responded with official comments.
