PlayStation’s Summer Is In Full Swing

The summer season is in full swing now. I know not because it is getting warmer outside, or the days are getting longer but because videogame developers are starting to share the news on their latest games. The first up to bat is Sony, who showcased a bunch of their latest games for PlayStation during the PlayStation showcase. There was so much to talk about that I did not get a chance to cover everything on Good Morning Multiverse so here’s where we catch up on all the announcements that Sony made during their Showcase.

Jade Raymond’s Haven Studio Reveals Fairgame$

Sony kicked the event off with revealing Fairgame$, which is coming from Jade Raymond’s Haven studio.  The game is a competitive heist experience all about robbing the ultra-rich. The game is coming to both PS5 and PC. The trailer showed hacking images while people are trying to break into a bank. The game also has a science-fiction aspect to it as well since the characters are shown holding advanced weapons. There is no release date for this game currently.

Spider-Man 2 Gets Lengthy Gameplay Showcase

The most anticipated game from Sony this year is Spider-Man 2. Sony showed off a brand-new gameplay trailer, featuring both Peter Parker (in his symbiote suit) and Miles Morales. Peter has a new move set thanks to the symbiote, and Miles has some new moves in his arsenal as well. The trailer also revealed the popular villain, Kraven the Hunter. Kraven is a character who has not gotten a lot of attention in mainstream Spider-Man media, so it will be interesting to see how the game uses him in a villain role. Overall, the game looks like more of the first game from a gameplay perspective, but it seems to have added new tweaks and such to the experience that makes it unique. Unfortunately, we still have no release date for Spider-Man 2 but I imagine it will be out sooner rather than later.

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater Remake Announced

This next announcement was a bit of a surprise, as Konami announced that they are making a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The game itself was not shown off and this seemed to be more of a “this is a thing that is happening” sort of announcement, and not much else was shown. The game did get a cool teaser trailer leading up to the man himself Snake. Along with the remake, Konami also announced the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1, which includes Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, which is coming to PlayStation 5 sometime this fall. If you are like me and have never played the MGS Series before (Please do not crucify me, I was an Xbox child growing up), then this collection would be a good way to start.

PlayStation Announced Dedicated Game Streaming Device

Sony then announced a new device that seems to be their version of the Nintendo Switch. While this is not the first time that Sony has tried to emulate the success of Nintendo, this one seems the most interesting. This device is called Project Q and it will allow players to stream any game from their PlayStation 5 console using Remote Play over WiFi. It has an 8-inch HD screen and all buttons and features the DualSense controller has. No release date was given for this new hardware. Sony also revealed the first official PlayStation 5 earbuds.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage Gets October Release Date

We finally have some release dates to talk about as the next Assassin’s Creed game has an October release date. Mirage will be coming out on October 12th on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PC, and Amazon Luna. PlayStation revealed a new feature called Assassin’s Focus, which lets you mark and assassinate several targets in a row. Overall, the game looks like the next evolution of the Assassin’s Creed series, and it seems to be on a smaller scale then the AC games of the past.

Alan Wake 2 Is Coming on October 17

Another game that got a release date is Remedy’s Alan Wake 2, The long-awaited horror sequel. The trailer shows the return of Alan Wake, who appeared to be trapped in the Dark Place. This time, Wake is joined by a new playable character, Saga Anderson, who is joining Alan in his investigation. The game is coming on October 17, just in time for Spooky Season. It seems to be the perfect game to play during Halloween.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 Gets New Trailer

Next up is another surprise announcement, this time for Dragon’s Dogma 2. The game was unveiled with a brand-new trailer, showcasing a ton of monsters including an giant dragon. This is the first Dragon’s Dogma game in over a decade. Like the MGS 3 Remake, we know very little about this game other than the fact that it is being made in the RE Engine just like Capcom’s other recent titles.

Bungie Announces New Marathon

Now we come to the biggest disappointment of the presentation for me personally. When I heard that Bungie was planning on re-booting Marathon, I was cautiously excited for it. Bungie showed off a trailer during the Showcase and I thought it looked good. Then the trailer said two words that totally killed my hype for the game. Those two words were “Multiplayer only”. For those of you that never played the original Marathon games, they had an insane sci-fi story, so to see that there is no single player for this new Marathon really killed any hype I had for this game. I’ll still probably at least try the game out when it comes out because I am a giant sucker for Bungie and their games ever since the Halo days.

Get a New Look at Street Fighter 6‘s Story Mode

Street Fighter 6 also got a new trailer during the showcase, “showcasing” (see what I did there?) the game’s brand-new story mode. The trailer showed the player’s avatar character interacting with the playable cast of the game.

The Talos Principle 2 Is Coming This Year

Croteam’s sequel to The Talos Principle is coming to PS5 Xbox Series X and PC this year.  The game was announced back in 2021 and details have been slim to none ever since. The game is set to expand on the first game’s themes with new environments and mind-bending challenges.

Foamstars Is a Splatoon-like Shooter from Square Enix

In another example of people trying to emulate Nintendo games, Square Enix has announced a new game called Foamstars, which seems to have the exact same premise as Splatoon, but with an anime aesthetic to it. The game is set to release for both PlayStation 4 and 5.

New Look at Adorable Indie The Plucky Squire

The Plucky Squire is looking to be a brand-new take on the top-down adventure game. The gameplay showed the protagonist jumping from storybook worlds to a real-life living room. The game also looks like it will constantly be shaking up the gameplay with all the different storybook settings the characters hop into.

Phantom Blade Zero Is a New Hack and Slash RPG

Another game that was revealed was Phantom Blade Zero. The game combines Kung Fu and Steampunk aesthetics. The game will feature hack and slash gameplay and a bleak semi open world. This is another game that does not have a release date just yet.

Ghostrunner 2 Announced for 2023

Ghostrunner 2 is the sequel to One More Level’s action platformer. The new gameplay prominently featured vehicular combat, with players riding at high speeds on a motorcycle. The game is coming sometime in 2023.

Resident Evil 4 Remake VR Mode Trailer for PSVR 2

In what is becoming a trend for Resident Evil games, the Resident Evil 4 remake will be receiving a VR mode for PSVR 2. No release date has been given for this new mode, but it has been announced to it will be a free update for owners of RE 4 Remake just like it was for the other RE games that have it. Surprisingly this isn’t the only horror VR title that was shown off at the showcase.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted 2 Announced for Late 2023

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted 2 is coming to PSVR 2 in late 2023. The first Help Wanted was a VR title that later came to consoles. It featured various minigames with all the different characters and environments from the series. The new game will bring new minigames, characters and environments into the series as well.

Gris Creator Reveals Neva, Coming 2024

From the makers of indie hit Gris comes Neva, a beautiful, painterly adventure with a striking art style. The game is scheduled for some time next year.

Cat Quest: Pirates of the Purribean Is Coming Next Year

Cat Quest: Pirates of the Purribean was officially revealed at today’s event, showing a swashbuckling twist on the original Cat Quest. The kitties are searching for a mythical artifact across adorable pirate-themed landscapes. The game is coming sometime next year. Also, this might be the cutest game I’ve ever seen.

Towers of Aghasaba Is a Breath of the Wild-like Game

Once again this is another example of someone trying to emulate Nintendo. This time it’s a game called Towers of Aghasaba. The game is obviously inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The trailer shows the character interacting with the world with a paraglider. There is also a heavy nature influence in the game with lots of beasts and animals shown in the trailer as well.

Revenant Hill Is Coming to PlayStation 4 and PS5

Revenant Hill (not to be confused with Silent Hill) is a new adventure coming from the makers of Night in the Woods. The teaser shows a black cat running through side scrolling, hand-drawn landscapes. We don’t know much about this new title, but it is coming to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

GranBlue Fantasy Relink Is Coming This Winter

GranBlue Fantasy Relink is another game that has been in development for quite some time. The game was announced back in 2016 and is finally coming out this winter. Platinum Games was originally on board to develop alongside Cygames, but the two parted ways in 2019. More updates are scheduled for some time this summer.

Ultros Is a Colorful Metroidvania Type

Ultros is another Metroidvania-esque game with a colorful art-style coming out for PS4, PS5 and PC. The showcase gave us our first look at the game. The art style is very pretty and it looks like a children’s book, which is always a fun aesthetic.

A Look at Perfect World Games’ Tower of Fantasy

Tower of Fantasy is an open-world sci-fi game coming from Hotta Studio. We got a look at the game’s bright, colorful landscapes and fast-paced combat today. The game is inspired by Genshin Impact with its artstyle and game play, so if you like Genshin, then Tower of Fantasy will be up your already.

Four New PSVR 2 Games Revealed

A segment of today’s showcase revealed a ton of new games coming to PSVR 2, including Arizona Sunshine 2, the military shooter Crossfire: Sierra Squad, nDreams’ VR first-person shooter  Synapse, and a Queen music pack DLC for Beat Saber. Sounds like typical VR fare, nothing to ground-breaking.

Firewalk’s Concord Is Coming Next Year to PS5 and PC

Concord is the first AAA title from Firewalk studios. It’s a new PVP Multiplayer game set in a science fiction universe and the game is coming to PS5 and PC. It should be interesting to see what else this game brings to the table, because it seems to be not unlike any other PVP multiplayer game.

New Gameplay Trailer for Immortals of Aveum

Ascendant Studios shared some fresh gameplay from Immortals of Aveum, the single-player first person magic shooter that’s coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on July 20. The game looks interesting because it isn’t a game that takes place in sci-fi or a post-apocalyptic world. Fantasy is an interesting genre to set a first-person shooter and magic is the cherry on top of the cake. This game definitely seems to be a unique case in the first-person shooter genre.

There you have it folks, everything that was shown at Sony’s most recent Showcase. Overall, it’s not the greatest presentation I’ve ever seen, the stand-outs being Spider-Man 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3. There are some hidden gems in there as well. I, for one, will be checking out Immortals of Aveum and there were some fun indie games in there as well. Let us know what you think in the comments!
