Marvel Shoots New York
Marvel Comics has announced they will be shooting their new Netflix series in New York.
At a press conference today, Governor Andrew Cuomo — along with The Walt Disney Company, Marvel, and Netflix — made the announcement that all four of the upcoming Netflix series, along with the mini-series, will be shooting primarily in New York. The four live-action shows will focus on the “flawed heroes of Hell’s Kitchen” and will be produced by Marvel Television and ABC Television Studios.
New York City will be the main locale for the shows — Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist — with filming set to start in Summer 2014. Governor Cuomo says the project will bring as many as three thousand jobs to New York. “New York is where the entertainment industry started, and this unprecedented commitment from Disney and Marvel is further evidence that we’re bringing it back bigger and better than ever before,” said Cuomo. “And when the entertainment industry thrives, it fuels dozens of other industries and businesses. The competition for these projects is fierce and Disney could have chosen to film these shows anywhere, but they knew that shooting in New York means getting to work with the best in world. These shows bring New York’s super heroes home where they belong–along with hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars in new business.”

Each of the four shows will have thirteen episodes, for a total of fifty-two hours of programming that lead into the Defenders mini-series. Daredevil will be first out of the gate, followed by Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. Each of the four solo shows will lead into the mini-series where the four combine forces as the Defenders. It’s a strategy that worked leading up to The Avengers, and it shows Marvel is thinking about overall world-building and shared universes in an unprecedented way.
The announcement follows related deals between Netflix and Disney — beginning with 2016 theatrically released feature films, Netflix will be the exclusive U.S. subscription television service for first-run, live-action and animated movies from the Walt Disney Studios, including titles from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Disneynature and Lucasfilm — and come on the heels of Governor Cuomo’s efforts to make film and television production a focus in New York, citing the positive impact on the economy to have a thriving film industry take up residence in the state.
I am truly looking forward to this venture with Netflix, but at the same time I hope that Disney/Marvel do the characters justice. Dare Devil, Cage, Iron Fist, and White Tiger, are some of Marvel’s heavy hitters of some gritty stories, I am truly happy to see that Netflix is taking a chance on the Marvel Knights.
