Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai was announced in February by Variety. The half hour show is set in 1920’s Shanghai telling the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing (the future shop owner Mr. Wing from the 1984 movie) met the young Mogwai named Gizmo. Joined by a teenage street thief named Elle, the three of them travel the Chinese countryside, encountering and battling colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore while trying to return Gizmo to his family. Along the way, they uncover a legendary treasure and are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.

This new series is a return to the Gremlins is a return to its cartoon roots. The 1984 film Gremlins was inspired by Warner Bros. cartoons featuring the devilish critters trying to down World War II era military planes. The film, directed by Joe Dante and written by Chris Columbus, took more of a Frank Capra’s small town USA feel and was a major box office hit grossing over $153 million worldwide with a budget of only $11 million. Dante returned to direct the sequel, 1990’s Gremlins 2: The New Batch, with Steven Spielberg also returning as the executive producer. There has been talk through the years for a Gremlins 3, but nothing has come of it.

Gremlins joins the rest of the more adult themed animation series that are heading toward the small screen which includes BoJack Horseman (Netflix), Solar Opposites and the 4 Marvel series (Hulu), and Star Trek: Lower Decks (CBS All Access).

Other shows that will also be a part of the new WarnerMedia streaming service include Dune: The Sisterhood, Station Eleven, Made for Love, Tokyo Vice, and Love Life.
