The Geekly with a Twist: October 12th-18th

Yup. It’s official. I’ve doomed us all. I’m getting ahead of schedule…on this at least. I’m only two weeks from my move to a new place and I’m not even remotely ready. That’s what happens when you’re a procrastinator, though… (and when you have video games at home to play that you just can’t play at work). So, in spite of the inevitable doom, onward with the history!

October 12th, 1979: The Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is published for the first time.

October 12th, 1992: Recently noted for his role as Peeta in The Hunger Games, Josh Hutcherson is born in Union, Kentucky.

October 13th, 1773: The Whirlpool Galaxy is first discovered.

October 13th, 1964: Christopher Judge, known for his role as Teal’c in Stargate SG-1, is born in Los Angeles, California.

October 15th, 1829: Asaph Hall, the noted astronomer who discovered the moons of Mars, is born in Goshen, Connecticut.

October 15th, 1946: Jo Grant, companion of the Third Doctor…or at least the woman who played her (Katy Manning) is born in Guildford, Surrey (yup, still England).

October 15th, 2003: The first Chinese manned spaceflight, Shenzhou 5, is launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert.

October 17th, 1914: Jerry Siegel, co-creator of Superman, is born in Cleveland, Ohio.

October 17th, 1948: Margo Kidder, the woman best known for her role as Lois Lane opposite Christopher Reeve’s Superman, is born in Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories (in Canada, of course!).

October 18th, 1935: Peter Boyle, notable in the SciFi world for both his Emmy-winning role on The X-Files and his hilarious role as Frankenstein’s monster in Young Frankenstein, is born in Morristown, Pennsylvania.

October 18th, 1947: The actor behind Henry Deacon, the everything of Eureka, Joe Morton is born in New York City.

So, of course, we’ve got to Twist it up in Kryptonian style again. How about a Superman to finish out your week (it’s a drink, not a shot this time)?

  • 1/3 oz peach schnapps
  • 1/3 oz coconut rum
  • 1/3 oz triple sec
  • splash of grenadine
  • pineapple juice

Fill a highball glass with ice and add the alcoholic ingredients. Fill with pineapple juice, stir, and top with grenadine.

And, of course, we’ve gotta Garnish the week right! It’s getting closer to Halloween, and it’s really getting down to the wire to get your costume ready. For that reason, how about a few awesome suggestions from yours truly?

Last year, I did a series about Halloween that you should definitely check outthere’s even a special post for costumes!

Also, geeksugar has put together a list of the awesome geeky costumes you can find on Etsy this year (for a “nearly” homemade piece), and I still love Listverse’s post from 2007 on the subject.

Of course, there’s also a list of do’s and don’t’s from Geek Girl Chicago (that I think can apply to any cosplay, too!).

Anyone else have ideas to spare or share? Or even an awesome resource? Post a comment or send us an email!

So, anyways, I need to get back to work on my costume, so, until next week, geek on!
