The Geekly with a Twist: June 22nd-28th

It’s official, summer is in full swing. How can I tell? Well, for one, we’re hitting the 100+ degree mark for the heat index here at HQ. Another is the fact that it seems like EVERY ROAD IN THE CITY IS TORN UP. Eek. I hate construction. So, to make at least ME happy…onward with the history!

June 22nd, 1978: Charon, the only known moon of Pluto, is discovered.

June 22nd, 2010: The first issue of “Now I Know” is sent out to 20 people. Nowadays, Dan Lewis brags subscription of about 50k. His first article? It was about how carrots were originally purple.

June 23rd, 1912: A brilliant computer science pioneer, Alan Turing, is born in London. Sadly, his life would only last just two weeks shy of 42 years.June 23rd, 1989: Tim Burton’s Batman releases in theaters.

June 24th, 2010: Apple releases the iPhone 4. Bank accounts around the world scream in pain (or something like that…).

June 25th, 1998: “Windows 98” goes on sale to the general public. Computers everywhere scream in agony (again, or something like that…). Oddly enough, Microsoft didn’t actually stop running support for the OS until July 11th, 2006.

June 27th, 1966: Dark Shadows (the TV show) begins its run on ABC-TV.

June 28th, 1926: The hilarious Mel Brooks is born in Brooklyn, New York. (If you don’t know who he is, you disappoint me. Just sayin’.)

So, in honor of the original Dark Shadows show, let’s Twist with something fun and a bit different (and extra yummy for summer-y times)…this Lush’s own creation, a Barnabas Collins.

  • 1 oz lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 oz gin
  • 1 tsp superfine sugar or simple syrup
  • 4 oz club soda (chilled)
  • 1 oz crème de cassis

Mix all ingredients in a tall glass. Top with the crème de cassis and garnish with a cherry. Enjoy!

And, of course, we’ll put a cherry on top of this Geekly with your Garnish. Since I’m currently banned from ThinkGeek because my wishlist is over $3700 (and other reasons too…), I’ve taken to raiding all of the usual nerdy blogs and then some. So, as such, I’ve attached myself to another new store…the Nerd Approved Shop! How else am I going to get my fix of wanting for Harry Potter House Crest Pins, the new LOTR Lego Sets, and Firefly Maquettes?

So, until next week, geek on!

  • I would live at ThinkGeek if they’d let me. But I think Timmy has a restraining order out against me. 😉

I’m such a big Dark Shadows fan (the original only, if you please) that I’d almost be willing to try that cocktail, if I liked gin, that is. 😀
