So many announcements coming out of Comic Con in San Diego. Where to start?

Let’s hit the high points on the Marvel and DC announcements with this one. More extensive coverage is coming later.

  • The sequel to The Avengers will be directed by Joss Whedon, and will be Avengers: Age of Ultron
  • Most of the cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past were on stage, and a clip reel was screened.
  • Director James Gunn and the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy flew in from London just to attend the panel and screen some footage. Karen Gillan has shaved her head to play Nebula.
  • Benecio Del Toro officially confirmed as The Collector
  • The Man of Steel sequel will be a Superman/Batman team-up a la the old World’s Finest monthly. Goyer on board for screenplay, with Snyder directing. Snyder mentions the two “facing off” and had actor Harry Lennix on stage to read lines from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. Although Snyder denies this is an adaptation, he says “it’s the thing that’ll tell this story”.  (still no word on Indiana Jones and the Hex of the Hydra)
  • Tom Hiddleston appeared in full costume as Loki during the panel for Thor: The Dark World. New footage screened, including a shot of Loki cutting off Thor’s hand as the hero reaches for Mjölnir. Plus, Jane slaps Loki “for New York” and Loki tells Sif, “I like her.”
  • Michael Jai White and Kevin Alejandro join the cast of Arrow as Bronze Tiger and Brother Blood, respectively. This on the heels of the announcement of Summer Glau joining the cast, along with Caity Lotz, who will be playing a vigilante that serves as the starting point for the Black Canary arc for Laurel.
  • Captain America: The Winter Solider will very closely follow Brubaker’s story.
  • Marc Webb, Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Dane DeHaan and Andrew Garfield were on hand for the Amazing Spider-Man 2 panel. Footage screened includes a fight with Rhino, both Osborns, and Gwen Stacy looking up at a very particular bridge.
  • Cobie Smulders will play Agent Maria Hill in the pilot for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which was screened in Ballroom 20. Ron Glass makes an appearance as a staff physician.
  • The Agent Carter one-shot short film was screened. This will be included on the Iron Man 3 Blu-Ray/DVD.

Be sure to keep watch, as we’ll have more compilations of SDCC news in the coming days.
