PS4 Passes 100 Million Units Sold

PlayStation 4 has just crossed over 100 million units sold, making it the fastest home console to reach the milestone.

The PlayStation 4 needed just five years and seven months to pass 100 million, beating the PlayStation 2’s five years and nine months to hit the same milestone.

In April, the PlayStation 4 had sold approximately 96.8 million units. Sony announced it sold 3.2 million units in Q1 FY2019, putting that number at 100 million. The 3.2 million units sold in Q1 is up from 2.9 million units sold in Q4 FY2018.

With a new console generation on the way, current-generation console sales are slowing down. Sony is predicting it will sell 15 million units in FY2019, which is down from its original estimate of 16 million. Sony says the change is due to “lower than expected non-first-party software sales” and “lower-than-expected PS4 hardware unit sales.”

The PlayStation 4 has run circles around Microsoft’s Xbox One console. Microsoft announced its gaming revenue was down 10% in Q4 FY2018, primarily due to a 48% drop in hardware sales. According to industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, the Xbox One has sold approximately 41 million units through 2018, less than half of the PlayStation 4’s sales.

2019 and early 2020 will be a victory lap for Sony with Death Stranding, The Last of Us 2 and Ghosts of Tsushima coming out. It is only fitting Sony ends this console generation with three highly anticipated exclusive games.
