Marisa Tomei In Talks to Play Aunt May
Marisa Tomei will play Aunt May in the new Spider-Man movie that is to be released on July 28, 2017.
Neither Marvel nor Sony has confirmed, but Variety’s inside sources told them the actress was made an offer. She will be joining Tom Holland, who is going to play Peter Parker, and director Jon Watts. Marvel fans will remember that she worked in The Wrestler with Mickey Rourke, who played Whiplash in Iron Man 2.

This will be a departure for Tomei, because she is usually seen in dramas and romantic comedies. Tomei won an Academy Award for My Cousin Vinny (1992) and will be in Train Wreck with Amy Schumer, which opens on July 17. She is best known for playing independent women that are complex and have had a difficult life.
Marvel and Sony are still looking for a writer, so there’s no word yet about her role as Aunt May.
Fans are speculating that this Spider-Man film will be more like the Ultimate Universe, in which Aunt May is younger and less grandmotherly than in the previous Spider-Man films.
Tomei is currently filming The Big Short with Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling, and has a recurring role for the second season of Fox’s Empire coming this Fall.
