DC Wants Watches the WATCHMEN Again [UPDATED]

Remember when DC launched the new logo? And one of them was Watchmen art? Well, it’s official. DC is going back for more Watchmen.

DC Entertainment just made the announcement, putting to bed speculation and rumor. Before Watchmen will be a set of seven prequels that expand on the work of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.

DC Co-Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee, say in the press release, that as publishers they have a responsibility to keep all of the DC characters relevant, and that “after twenty-five years, the Watchmen are classic characters whose time has come for new stories to be told.”

These are inter-connected stories (which means you’ll have to buy all of them to keep up, right?), with a new issue coming out every week starting this summer. Also included will be a two-page back story called Curse of the Crimson Corsair, by members of the original Watchmen team: editor Len Wein writing with art by colorist John Higgins.

What do the original creative team members think? Dave Gibbons: “The original series of Watchmen is the complete story that Alan Moore and I wanted to tell. However, I appreciate DC’s reasons for this initiative and the wish of the artists and writers involved to pay tribute to our work. May these new additions have the success they desire.”

UPDATE: Alan Moore talked with the New York Times and said, “I tend to take this latest development as a kind of eager confirmation that they are still apparently dependent on ideas that I had 25 years ago.”

Plus, we found this July 2010 interview with Alan Moore [via Wired] regarding early discussions DC had with him. In a nutshell, he’s done with comics. And here’s the Bleeding Cool interview with Adi Tantimedh from August 2010.

io9 has collected all of the covers in one place.
