Vanessa Hudgens First to Be POWERLESS at NBC
Yes, it’s been ten years since High School Musical. Adjust your WABAC Machines accordingly, because Vanessa Hudgens is about to enter the world of DC Comics.
Following her performance as Rizzo on the recent Grease Live on Fox, Hudgens was offered several projects, opting to take the lead role of Emily Locke in the NBC workplace comedy Powerless, centered around an insurance company in a world populated by the likes of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the rest of the DC Universe.
According to Deadline, Locke is “an insurance claims adjuster who loves her job because she gets to help people and who likes to fly under the radar and just get her work done. She finds herself increasingly exasperated by the disruptive antics of the various Super Heroes that proliferate in her city.”
The new series comes from A to Z creator Ben Queen and Warner Bros. TV, with Queen set as executive producer along with Michael Patrick Jann, who will also direct the pilot.
Ratings for A to Z were never strong, starting at 1.9 and dropping steadily to a .6 for the final of thirteen episodes. Reception was mixed, with many considering it too light and without substance.
Powerless will be the first straight-up comedy live action offering set in the DC Universe, certainly a departure from the “grimdark” tone of the cinematic projects. And don’t look for a cross-over into the similarly toned Supergirl or The Flash.
But maybe we can hope for Booster Gold?
