SUPERGIRL Casting Change-Up: Erica Durance Replaces Laura Benanti

Supergirl’s mother is getting a make-over as another DC legacy performer joins the cast.

Erica Durance (Smallville‘s Lois Lane) will replace Laura Benanti as Alura Zor-El. Durance joins the show following her five-season run as Dr. Alex Reid on the supernatural medical drama Saving Hope.

“Unfortunately Laura, who Greg [Berlanti] and I have worked with for years going back to Eli Stone, was unable to continue in the role due to work commitments in New York,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said in a statement. “But we are so blessed that Erica has come aboard to offer her own interpretation of Kara’s mother. We had tremendous success with a former Lois Lane last season with Teri Hatcher. We know Erica will continue the proud tradition of legacy actors joining our shows and creating new and exciting takes on classic DC characters.”

Durance comes on board as Benanti turns her focus on her new job as a mother:

Durance joins fellow DC legacy performers Dean Cain, Helen Slater, Teri Hatcher, Laura Vandervoort, and Lynda Carter. Could any other Smallville alumni be arriving anytime soon?
