Roundup 7.11.11 – GAME OF THRONES

GoT Dragons?

July 12 marks the long awaited release of A Dance with Dragons, book five in George R.R. Martin’s continuing saga: A Song of Ice and Fire. Here is a preview in the Wall Street Journal.

Reviews are coming in, and for the most part they’re very positive. io9 says it’s “worth the wait”, and Time calls it a “masterpiece”.

Originally planned to be one story along with A Feast for Crows, Dragons became its own book when the material grew too big for just one volume.

GoT Brienne?

I’ve been wondering who HBO would get to play Brienne for the next installments of Game of Thrones.  And now we know. Gwendoline Christie has been cast for the upcoming season. [More at IFTN]

“This was another one of those cases where there was hardly any debate,” wrote Martin on his blog. “…we looked at a dozen actresses who were reading for Brienne and one actress who WAS Brienne. Gwendoline gave a great reading, and her look was just perfect.”

GoT a Leak?

The German people have incurred the wrath of GRRM recently when they mistakenly shipped out copies of the new book too early. Now George wants retribution.

Yes, I know, Amazon Germany screwed up big time and started shipping A DANCE WITH DRAGONS before they were supposed to. I am told that about 180 copies got out before they were made aware of their mistake and shut down shipping.I am not happy about this. My publishers are furious.

If we find out who is responsible, we will mount his head on a spike.

I bet he gets it, too.

GoT Killer Costumes?

One of the things I like most about GoT is the costumes. I know, I know, there’s a lot more going on than the clothes, but one has to admit, the costuming is pretty epic. Michele Clapton is the genius responsible. More about her here.

GoT the Books?

If you like what you’ve seen in the HBO Series, you’ll likely want to keep up with the books too. Amazon has a four book box set you can purchase here. But if you are one of those that REALLY LOVES the world of the Song of Ice and Fire series, and have already read the previous books, you can get a jump on the new one. Here’s one place where you can purchase “A Dance with Dragons.”

Those aren’t the only offerings from the Seven Kingdoms though. You might check out “The Hedge Knight” and “The Sworn Sword.” Not prequels, exactly, but they do take place, if I’m not mistaken, a hundred years before the events in “Game of Thrones.” They’re equally as fun, and deal with all the honor and brutality that runs rampant in that world.

If you like your reading a little more user friendly, you can always check out the graphic serials that are coming. Bantam Books recently bought the rights to the graphic novel. You can read more about that here.

Meanwhile, George R. R. Martin has confirmed that the series will end with seven books, but he has not started work on the sixth one yet. [via TVOvermind]
