Here’s the latest news about HBO’s adaptation of the novels by George R. R. Martin:

CASTING ABOUT

New residents in Westeros! George R. R. Martin revealed on his blog, that the Lord of Bones, more commonly known as Rattleshirt, will be played by Edward Dogliani. And John Stahl will also be joining the cast, as Lord Rickard Karstark.

New York Magazine has this interview with Martin, in which he talks about his favorite actors from the show, along with the upcoming challenges in translating the books to the screen. He also doesn’t plan to start working on the next novel until at least January.

Sean Bean (Ned Stark) told Access Hollywood that he would welcome a chance to reprise his role, probably in flashbacks. “It was a fantastic time for me and it was a really ambitious project by HBO, and all the guys involved — the producers, the directors, the actors. It was a wonderful experience, and hopefully… I think I am in flashbacks in the books.”

A VIDEO GAME OF THRONES

The Escapist has a review of the Game of Thrones: Genesis video game, which covers events that led up to those chronicled in Martin’s books.  There’s another review of the game over at Aus Gamers, and one at NZ Gamer, and one at Game Rant. Have you played the game? What do you think of it?

Outside of Genesis, there are three other video games in the works. In this article at USA Today, Martin talks about developing the RPG with Cyanide Studios. Game Rant has new screen shots and story details, like this:

A VIDEO RELEASE DATE

Season one of the show will be coming to DVD and Blu-Ray in March, according to WinterIsComing.net. They speculate a March 20th release date, with France possibly getting their copies on the 7th.

MERCHANDISING

HBO Licensing & Retail has granted worldwide (non-North America) licensing to Bradford Licensing. Bradford will handle the development of new tie-in merchandise for the show.  The company handles merchandising for various brands including Pepsi, Pez, Panama Jack, Dos Equis, and Sherlock Holmes[More at Licensing.biz]

Locally (here in North America), the merchandising will be handled by Dark Horse Comics, and they’re very excited about it. “We are delighted to be part of HBO’s licensing roster for Game of Thrones. We are big fans of the television adaptation,” said Dark Horse’s VP of Product Development, David Scroggy. “We are working closely with HBO to develop a line of products inspired by the series that will delight the fan base.”
