We Don't Steal Copy
In the wake of the controversy over the Huffington Post’s recent “over-aggreagating” of source material, I’d like to take a moment and comment on the evolution of journalism, and how we try to get things right here at SciFi4Me.
First, let’s remember that this kind of thing has been going on since journalism got started, so for there to be so much hoopla over HuffPo is really just an over-reaction to a greater issue, which is a cultural laziness that has been inculcated into our society. (But that’s a topic for a political blog, perhaps…)
Here at SciFi4Me, we do a bit of the aggregating ourselves. Like with other media outlets, we have limited resources. We can only be certain places at certain times, while the Internet is everywhere (thanks, Al Gore!) for us to find and share information.
Our goal is to be a portal for you to access that information. We get all sorts of links to stories from around the world, and through our “Roundup” pages, we bring that to you, along with links to those sources.
We will not plagiarize other stories. We may quote, we may reference, but we won’t plagiarize. And we’re making every effort to properly source photos that we use in our articles. Sometimes that’s not easy to do, but it’s getting better as we get more experience.
As SciFi4Me continues to grow, you will always be welcome to give us your feedback, ask us questions, send us suggestions. We’re fans in a community of fans, and through this site, we’re linking you all together.
Now, go light a campfire, roast some marshmelons, and sing “Space Oddity”.
Over and out.
