Universal Outbids for EXTINCTION

Universal has left other bids in their dust, acquiring the distribution rights to the sci-fi thriller Extinction from Good Universe and Mandeville Films. Michael Peña will star, and Ben Young will direct.

It’s a story of an average man (Peña) who has a reoccurring nightmare of losing his family. When the planet is attacked by aliens, he discovers an unknown superpower strength as he fights for his family’s survival and possibly saving the world at the same time. The role was originally set for James McAvoy.

The screenplay was written by Oscar nominated Eric Heisserer (Arrival, Lights Out), Spenser Cohen (Moonfall), and Bradley Caleb Kane. Tod Lieberman and David Hoberman of Mandeville Films will produce (The Fighter, Warm Bodies) with Good Universe’s Nathan Kahane and Joe Drake (Don’t Breathe, Juno).

This is the second acquisition of Good Universe’s that Universal has purchased in the recent months. The Pact currently has a release date in April 2018.

Peña’s recent credits include The Martian and Ant-Man. He will next be seen alongside Dax Shepard in CHiPs.

Young’s debut feature Hounds of Love premiered last year at Venice Days, taking home the best actress prize for Ashleigh Cummings.

Universal is looking to start shooting in April.
