The Geekly with a Twist: November 11th-17th

Yup, it’s time for your favorite article of the week.  So, I may be a bit delusional but happy Veteran’s Day, everyone (a special thanks to all of our soldiers past, present, and future…regardless of the situation you all deserve many holidays to celebrate all that you do for your country)!  Okay, so, it’s officially time to start talking Thanksgiving.  Again, the first person to start singing carols gets it.  So, onward with the history!

November 11th, 1851: Alvan Clark submits a patent for his improvements on the telescope.

November 11th, 1966: Gemini XII is launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida.  It is the last manned flight of the Gemini program.

November 11th, 2006: The Playstation 3 is released in Japan.

November 13th, 1971: The Mariner 9 spacecraft became the first to orbit another planet (Mars).

November 14th, 1969: Apollo 12 launches from Cape Kennedy, Florida.

November 16th, 1965: Venera 3, a Soviet probe, is launched from Baikonur, Kazakhstan.  The probe would later become the first unmanned spacecraft to reach the surface of another planet (Venus).

November 17th, 1970: Lunokhod 1, a Soviet remote-controlled vehicle, lands on the moon.

November 17th, 2006: The Playstation 3 went on sale on North America.

For your weekly Twist, why not try a drink in honor of one of the most successful games to have released on Playstation (if you don’t get the reference you don’t deserve to live): the Golden Chocobo.  (A bit and awesome thanks to The Drunken Moogle for being amazing yet again.)

  • 1/2 shot of Goldschlager
  • 1/2 shot of Wild Turkey American Honey
  • 1 can of Ginger Ale

Shake the whiskey liqueur and cinnamon schnapps and pour into an Irish coffee glass.  Add ginger ale until the glass is full and stir gently to create movement of the gold flakes.  Enjoy!

And of course, what would your Geekly be without your Garnish?  Since I know the inevitable is coming up and trying to get ready is always a good idea, it’s time to start featuring great gift ideas.  First off, I’d like to share a bit of geekery that I found via Stephanie Williams of Rainbow Darkness Studios (an amazing and creative friend of SciFi4Me)…

With geeky gems based primarily from Mario, nerd JERK‘s got everything from cross-stitch to buttons and it’s all handmade and super cute.  It’d be the perfect gift for any of the nerds in your family, office, or personal life.  Seriously, what better way to a geek girl’s heart than with a mini red mushroom (a great stocking stuffer!) or with an overly adorable Yoshi egg?!?  They’re all on my list this year, if anyone was wondering. 🙂  You can also follow her blog to get a little behind-the-scenes action from the artist herself.

Anyways, until next week, geek on!
