Making the Grade – Review of Nintendo Direct's E3 Press Conference

Nintendo really had to put their best foot forward after the closer that Sony put on in their press conference. The highlight reel did feature Sonic; however, there wasn’t actually a trailer. They also announced that Wii Party U and Wii Fit U will be delayed. Nintendo did try something new with streaming the press conference, which I feel turned on them. There was a problem and many people were not able to actually view it online. This conference was just “safe” for a lack of a better word.

With the success that Nintendo had with Super Mario 3D World for the 3DS, Nintendo announced that there will be a new version for the Wii U that will allow four players to play simultaneously with four different identities — Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Peach.   The game itself seems like it will be fun. To end the summary of this game: cat suit.

New Mario Kart was announced, and there are some new concepts that I think will have players simply surprised. Some of the features shown are: vertical walls, under water propellers, and more. This game was pushed as one of their better online, multi-player games.

New Super Smash Bros. — Mega Man and “The Villager” from Animal Crossing will join the battle. Nintendo also confirmed the return of several classic characters: Mario, Samus Aran, Fox McCloud, Donkey Kong, Pikachu, Pit, Bowser and Princess Peach. The battle stages revealed the classic battlefield location, a level set on the train from The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Mega Man’s Dr. Wily Stage, an Animal Crossing location, Skyloft from Skyward Sword, a stage that appeared to be set in Kakariko Village from Twilight Princess, a Nintendogs level, and so many other levels. This is a game that I am looking forward to. Thank you for answering my plea for Mega Man!

The Legend of Zelda: Link Between Two Worlds — this is the official name for Zelda: Link to the Past 2.

Another Zelda game that is set to release in October 2013 is The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD. Something that was interesting is that Nintendo is bring back the Tingle Tuner to the Wii U. You’ll be able to write messages to Miiverse, which will exist within the game world as a message in a bottle. These bottles will wash ashore in other players’ games.

Other titles were Bayonetta 2, Pikman 3, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Wonderful 101

During the conference Nintendo confirmed 14 third-party titles, which are: Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Batman: Arkham Origins, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, Deux Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut, Disney Infinity, Just Dance 2014, Rayman Legends, Scribblenauts: Unmasked, Disney’s Planes, Shin Megami Tensei IV, Skylanders Swap Force, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Sonic: Lost World, and Watch Dogs

Nintendo could have really come out with a bang with all the rumors of really awesome games. I really wanted them to explain why I should get the Wii U; they have broke down why the system is special and what makes them stand out besides “we have Mario games”. Honestly, Nintendo had their chance to spill their secrets and they still didn’t say much. Besides all the flaws and being secretive, I do think they have some really good games. One thing that I believe needs to happen, especially with PS4 being $399 is a price cut for the Wii U.

Overall I would give the press conference a grade of “D+.”
