Googly-eyed for STAR WARS
As we count down the days before the upcoming release of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, we’ve been inundated with marketing and branding at almost every turn. I, personally, have had The Imperial March (also known as Darth Vader’s Theme) playing in my head for at least two weeks, and am reminded of it by almost everything from beeping cash registers to dogs barking in counts of three. It’s got to be one of the most overplayed songs in commercial history. I’ve heard that song on countless commercials and have seen Star Wars branding on items that seem entirely unrelated to Star Wars…like oranges. What the heck to oranges have to do with Star Wars?

As annoying as some of this can be, I was delighted to see that Google embraced the idea of playfully saluting the upcoming movie with a search engine Easter egg. As many people have discovered, if you type “a long time ago in a galaxy far far away” into Google’s search engine, you’ll be in for a treat. As a fun salute to the iconic opening text from the Star Wars movies, the search results are displayed in gold scrolling font against a starry background (music optional).
I found that the effect didn’t work in all browsers, so if you don’t get the desired results, try Chrome or Safari. Just a bit of fun for us search engine junkies and Star Wars fans as we anticipate Episode VII, which is set thirty years after the defeat of the galactic Empire, opening in theaters December 18th.
Maybe then we can get back to hearing too many renditions of The Carol of the Bells and other over-used holiday references. May the Force be with us, every one.
