Fox Goes to GOTHAM

Breaking late yesterday was word that the Fox network had won the bidding war on a new show from Warner Brothers.

Gotham, telling the origin story of Commissioner James Gordon, will be produced by Warner Brothers Television and distributed on Fox, which has put in a series commitment. This means the show is actually going on the air, or else Fox pays a stiff penalty.

The Mentalist show-runner Bruno Heller will oversee production on the new show, which will follow Detective James Gordon during his days on the Gotham City Police before the arrival of a certain Dark Knight Detective. And while it’s not a straight adaptation of Gotham Central by Greg Rucka and Ed Brubaker — which is set after Gordon retired — the show will undoubtedly have elements of same.

Early word is that Batman will not make an appearance, but there will be a number of villains — which ones is not known yet, but it’s a safe bet the Joker won’t be one of them. Most likely, given Gordon’s history in modern-day comics, this show will be more along the lines of the “honest cop in a crooked town” scenario we saw in books like Batman: Year One and others.

Although it’s odd that DC Comics would make this announcement late in the afternoon on the same day 11.9 million people are watching another group of comic book characters with badges make their debut on another network…

or maybe it isn’t.
