FLASH GORDON Director Set by Fox

The new Flash Gordon movie now has a director, according to Deadline.

Julius Avery has been set to write and direct the new Fox production, which was originally to be directed by Matthew Vaughn. Vaughn will instead produce along with John Davis, and Hearst’s head of film C. J. Kettler.

The PR blitz is underway for Avery’s new horror flick, Overlord, which premiered at Fantastic Fest to good reviews. Set for release on November 9th, Overlord has a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Avery calls it “Indiana Jones on acid”. The film is set during World War II and tells the story of a group of American soldiers who stumble across a supernatural Nazi science program in occupied France.

The Australian director made his debut on Son of a Gun, starring Alicia Vikander and Ewan McGregor. Avery says he grew up loving the Flash Gordon comic strip, which was created by Alex Raymond in 1934 as competition for the established Buck Rogers strip.

Flash Gordon has appeared in other media over the years, most notably the movie serials starring Buster Crabbe (who also play Buck Rogers) and the 1980 film starring Sam Jones. The development of Star Wars came about because George Lucas originally wanted to make a new Flash Gordon film, but could not obtain the rights.

In the comics, Flash Gordon had an influence on the creation of Superman, Batman, and Hawkman.
