First Look at SUPERGIRL

Warner Brothers has released the first two official images of Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El, more readily known as Supergirl.

The new series began shooting this week, and stars Benoist as the titular superheroine, cousin to Superman, and ready to save the day now that she’s decided to embrace her powers to help the people of Earth. At 24, Kara has been in hiding, living with the Danvers family and trying to maintain a “normal” life.

The costume was designed by three-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood, who has also designed costumes for Arrow and The Flash. While it’s reminiscent of the pre-New52 Supergirl, there are also elements that bring it forward to the aesthetic of the current darker DC Cinematic Universe.

“In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today,” Atwood said.

The show also stars Calista Flockhart as Kara’s boss, Cat Grant, David Harewood as Hank Henshaw, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, and Chyler Leigh as Kara’s sister, Alex Danvers, a doctor who also has some connection to Henshaw.

Henshaw, for those not familar, was one of four men who appeared after The Death of Superman, claiming to be the real Kal-El. In Henshaw’s case, he was actually a cyborg who had slowly gone insane after the death of his wife following a failed experiment. Henshaw’s team was modeled after the Fantastic Four, only their fate wasn’t as positive.

Laura Benanti will have a recurring role as Kara’s birth mother, Alura Zor-El; Dean Cain (Superman in Lois & Clark: The Adventures of Superman) and Helen Slater (1984’s big screen Supergirl) are also in the cast, in undisclosed roles.
