CIVIL WAR Begins Production; More Cast Reveals

BANNER_News2013

Marvel has begun production on Captain America: Civil War, which is starting to sound a lot like Age of Ultron Part Two, given how many characters are showing up.

The official synopsis from Marvel:

“Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.”

The “nefarious villain” is Daniel Brühl’s Baron Zemo, a Hydra top dog and Captain America’s long-running nemesis in the comics. This particular Zemo is thought to be the son of the Baron Zemo Cap faced during World War II.

The announcement from Marvel also includes a rundown of the cast, and it’s certainly full.

  • Chris Evans – Steve Rogers/Captain America
  • Robert Downey, Jr. – Tony Stark/Iron Man
  • Scarlett Johannson – Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow
  • Sebastian Stan – Bucky Barnes
  • Anthony Mackie – Sam Wilson/Falcon
  • Paul Bettany – Vision
  • Jeremy Renner – Clint Barton/Hawkeye
  • Don Cheadle – Jim Rhoades/War Machine
  • Elizabeth Olsen – Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch

That’s already a full list, but add to it Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man, Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones, and Chadwick Boseman in his debut as Wakanda’s prince T’Challa/Black Panther.

Plus, we learned yesterday that Emily VanCamp would reprise her role as Sharon Carter/Agent 13 — and with this announcement Marvel makes her identity official — and Martin Freeman is also on board in an undisclosed role (speculated to be government agent Everett Ross).

Speaking of Ross… Civil War will also mark the surprise return of William Hurt as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, thus making Incredible Hulk officially back in the land of the living as far as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been concerned.

Directors Anthony and Joe Russo are back for this feature, in addition to having lined up Avengers: Infinity War and the next Spider-Man solo film, which will also be part of the MCU. Spider-Man will make his debut in Civil War, but the casting hasn’t been announced yet.

Princple photography began today in Atlanta. The film opens in theaters May 6, 2016.

UPDATE: Civil War writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who also wrote Captain America: The First Avenger and Captain America: The Winter Soldier have been hired to pen the screenplay for both parts of Avengers: Infinity War.  They also co-wrote Thor: The Dark World.

Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 will open in theaters May 4, 2018, with Part 2 following on May 3, 2019.
