Let’s face it, all of us have had our moments when you we go from one extreme to another. Sometimes it is hard to understand what is going on in someone’s head, especially when that person is has an emotional disorder. Occasionally getting into someone’s mind can be the craziest adventure a person can have; this is exactly what BOOM! Studio’s Polarity by Max Bemis and Jorge Coehlo will offer its readers.

Issue 1 (cover), Comic Book Resources

For those who are thinking that Max Bemis sounds familiar, he is the frontman of the band Say Anything. Polarity is about a bipolar artist, Timothy Wood that seems to be stuck in a meaningless, vain hipster world–a world that is also known as Brooklyn. Tim survives a car accident, caused by a manic episode of delusion and determines that there is more to the disorder, and that the bipolar medication is suppressing more than just depression: it’s been restraining his super powers!

Bemis’ writing is surprisingly brilliant. It is witty, smart, and funny (when it needs to be). Bemis himself has bipolar disorder, and the mini-series, is based off an Say Anything album “…Is a Real Boy”. I found that the craziness within the story line is perfect in expressing what may go on in someone’s head; however, the crazy twist at the end of issue number one is mind-blowing. The ultimate question is: is all this actually happening, or is it in Tim’s head? In Polarity issue two (came out May 29, 2013) the readers dive deeper into the folds of Bemis’ story line, which you will have to read to find out. The gist of the issue is that Tim’s so-called superpower creates the cockier side of him; yet this gives him the option of choosing to use his powers for good or to join the dark side. What will he choose? Is this all reality or in his head? The series thus far is definitely gripping, and will keep you wanting more.

One interesting feature about this series is that it has its own soundtrack.  With each issue, Bemis has written a song to accompany the issue. The readers can sit back with Polarity while listening to the song that helps guides the plot (or so I’m assuming).

Well, that’s it for today. Signing out.
