MARVEL Unleashes Reality

Yesterday, we broke the news out of SXSW about Marvel’s new digital comics initiative. They’re calling it Marvel ReEvolution, and it includes new formats for their digital comics as well as a 3D “Augmented Reality” app. Now, we have more details.

Marvel’s new app is based on the Aurasma platform, and will be released on April 2nd. Using the new app to scan products with the Marvel AR logo, readers can unlock exclusive content: behind-the-scenes, new footage, interviews, and recaps, among other material.

Peter Phillips, senior VP and general manager for Marvel Digital Media Group, said it’s the next big thing in comics:

“It’s time to join the Marvel ReEvolution, as we bring the worlds of print and digital media together for an unprecedented fan experience. Avengers VS X-Men is the biggest story we’ve ever told and teaming with Aurasma allows us to bring our fans a deeper experience when they purchase select Marvel comics and other Marvel products. Just wait till you see what we’ve planned!”

The free app – available for both Android and iOS – uses Aurasma’s image recognition technology to recognize images in new Marvel comic books, promotional posters and other merchandise, seamlessly augmenting the images with interactive virtual content such as videos, animations and more.
