Freeform Renews SHADOWHUNTERS
During a live chat on Facebook, the Shadowhunters cast were part of the announcement that Freeform has renewed the show for a second season.
The cast were told just before going live during the chat, which was the first time a season renewal has been announced by Facebook Live. Katherine McNamara, Emeraude Toubia, Isaiah Mustafah, and Harry Shum, Jr. were joined by show creator Ed Decter and executive producer McG.
Says McNamara: “We really poured our heart and soul into the show, and we’re glad that you guys enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed making it.”
McNamara stars as Clary Fray, who turns 18 and discovers that she comes from a long line of human-angel hybrids called “shadowhunters” who are sworn to protect the world from demons. In the course of the season, she learns that her memories have been completely wiped by a Warlock at her mother’s behest, and she gets caught up in the race to find the Mortal Cup, which has the power to create an army of shadowhunters. Whoever controls the Cup controls the army, and Clary’s father is the villain.
Dominic Sherwood, Matthew Daddario, and Alberto Rosende joined via chat on the co-stars’ phones. Rosende echoed McNamara with his thanks to the fans. “We’re very excited to have a season two, and we can’t wait to continue on with this amazing story.”
Shadowhunters claims the #2 spot for network premiere numbers, scoring 1.6 million in adults 18-49 and 1.4 million in adults 25-54, and it’s the #4 most engaging scripted series on social media.
The show is based on the series of books by Cassandra Clare. The Shadowhunter Chronicles is a collection of novels, short stories, and graphic novels that tell the tale of human-angel hybrids sworn to protect humanity. The Mortal Instruments is a series of five novels — City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass, City of Fallen Angels, City of Lost Souls and May’s City of Heavenly Fire — that take place chronologically third in a series of stories that includes The Infernal Devices, The Dark Hours, and The Dark Artifices series.
The first season of Shadowhunters has been working off City of Bones as its source material, just as the failed movie adaptation did in 2013.
