The Geekly with a Twist: July 13th-19th
It’s here. Finally. Fiiinnnaaallllyyyy. While I know it’s ridiculously exciting, I’m not talking about San Diego Comic-con but something more awesome…your Geekly! Okay, so, that might be a bit egotistical, SDCC is fanboy-level exciting. So, we’re to a new chapter in the Geekly era…past the one year mark! July 13th, 1934– Aleksei Stanislavovich Yeliseyev, a cosmonaut who flew on three separate space flights, is born in Zhizdra (in modern-day Russia).
July 13th, 1950– American astronaut George “Pinky” Nelson is born in Charles City, Iowa. He logged 411 hours in space before his retirement 1989.
July 13th, 1995– A man by the name of Godtfred Kirk Christiansen passed away. The name doesn’t ring many bells, but he’s actually pretty important in geek history. Why? He’s the son of Ole Kirk Christiansen- the founder of the Lego Group. In 1949, Godtfred bought the patent to the Lego brick and began producing plastic bricks as opposed to the wooden ones and the rest, they say, is history.
July 15th, 1915– Albert Ghiorso, the American scientist who helped discover a record of 12 chemical elements for the periodic table (elements numbered 95-106…bonus points for naming them without Googling it), is born in Vallejo, California.
July 15th, 1967– Adam Savage (of exploding things fame…that’s Mythbusters in more simple terms) is born in New York City.
July 15th, 1983– The NES (Nintendo Entertainment System for those less awesome) is released in Japan. It would later go on to be named the “single greatest video game console in history” by IGN, beating out 25 other consoles.
July 15th, 2003– The Mozilla Foundation is organized following the dissolution of Netscape Communications Corporation.
July 17th, 1920– Gordon Gould, the physicist often credited with the invention of the laser, is born in New York City.
July 17th, 1969– Scott Johnson, the cartoonist responsible for The 56 Geeks Project is born in Utah.
July 18th, 1980– Real-life geek and beautiful actress, Kristen Bell is born in Huntington Woods, Michigan. (Her role in Fanboys is epic, fyi.)
July 19th, 1988– Sketch comic and Streamy Award-winning vlogger, Shane Dawson is born in Long Beach, California. You can check out his stuff over on YouTube.

I know I’ve said it before, but especially considering the record-breaking crowds, make sure you are drinking your water out on that floor! Electrolyte based drinks aren’t as 100% amazing as you might think, but it’s better than nothing…just remember that water is FREEEEEE!
