STAR WARS Continues to Make Bank

The top two movies of all time belong to James Cameron. But that very well may change soon.

Avatar ($2.78 billion) and Titanic ($2.19 billion) currently hold the top spots for worldwide box office numbers, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to pound through box office records, now unseating Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 for the number seven slot with $1.39 billion after Friday’s box office.

Taking in $59.5 million on its seventeenth day of release, Star Wars is on track to surpass Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.4 billion) by the end of the weekend, with projected additional earnings at $60 million. International grosses have topped $700 million, and The Force Awakens is expected to beat the Avatar domestic record of $760 million by early next week.

The movie is on pace to move past not only Avengers, but also Furious 7 in the international rankings, and will soon eclipse Jurassic World worldwide as it did in the U.S. market. The top foreign markets for Star Wars are the U.K. ($133.5m), Germany (473.9m), France ($61.4m), and Australia ($47.1m).

Then Star Wars opens in China on January 9th.

Analysts predict the Chinese market could be the largest yet for Star Wars. George Lucas has stated that he’s amazed at the performance of the new film in the franchise. Certainly the executives at The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm are pleased with their investment.

And that doesn’t even count all those wonderful toys…
