Report: J.A.R.V.I.S. Becomes Ultron

The web site Unleash the Fanboy has shared with us this report: Tony Stark’s virtual butler, J.A.R.V.I.S. (Just A Rather Very Intelligent System), will become the villain Ultron in Avengers 2.

This is based on putting several pieces together after seeing animatic storyboards hit the web last week, showing an alternate scene between Loki and Stark, in which Loki manipulates the AI butler into trying to convince Tony he’s better than the rest of the team. The scene plays out more between Loki and Stark, but the opening segment has J.A.R.V.I.S. saying some very non-normal things that would be consistent with the Ultron persona.

Granted, this didn’t happen in the movie, but it at least got as far as the storyboards. And as Joss Whedon has confirmed that original Ultron creator Hank Pym won’t be in Avengers 2 (not showing up until his own film, Ant Man), the question then becomes how Ultron comes to exist. He’s a Stark product in an animated version of the story as well, so it’s not without precedent that Ultron would be a development of Stark Industries.

With that in mind, UTF contacted their sources, who have confirmed Paul Bettany is in negotiations for a new contract, and that J.A.R.V.I.S. becomes Ultron. The reasoning behind a new contract? Because up until now, Bettany’s work has been voice only. So does this mean the actor might actually have a presence on-screen as some form of Ultron?

  • OH this SUCKS! Hank Pym MADE ULTRON NOT FRIGGEN TONY STARK! god how many times are they going to rape the comic books

    • If Ant Man were coming out prior to Avengers 2, it would make sense to use the original story. But since we haven’t seen Pym, and the audience already has a connection to JARVIS, from a movie universe standpoint, it makes sense. This wouldn’t be the first time we saw Ultron as the result of something Stark did. It was also done in Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow, and Ultron also appeared before Pym did in Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. So I’d say look at the movie universe as something akin to the Ultimate universe. Things are not always going to be the way they were in the comics, for a number of reasons.

Besides, it’s Whedon. I’d cut him a little slack and see where he goes with it.

      • How does it make sense? Pym is the creator of Vision and Ultron and Iron man is not the b all of everything

        • From a story perspective as it exists in the currenty movie universe, to introduce Ultron as Hank Pym’s creation before introducing Pym would be jarring for the non-comics audience, and they would spend a good portion of the movie either having to develop a connection with Pym before the danger of Ultron really means anything emotionally, or they’re left with a confused bit of exposition trying to catch everyone up on things before moving into the main part of the story.

Given how IM3 ended, the movie universe will likely put a corrupted version of JARVIS into one of the remote-control suits. Structurally, it holds up, even though purists will cry “foul”.
