PACIFIC RIM Sequel Sets Female Lead
Pacific Rim: Maelstrom has added actress and singer Cailee Spaeny in the female lead role opposite John Boyega and Scott Eastwood.
The sequel to the kaiju-vs-machine slugfest, which some were wondering would even happen after Universal dragged its heels on deciding to green-light, is now set to hit theaters February 23, 2018. Daredevil showrunner Steven DeKnight will direct, with Guillermo del Toro moving solely to a producer role after directing the original.
Boyega will star as the son of Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost, and outside of that, details about the project are pretty sparse. We do know that Charlie Hunnam will not reprise his role as Raleigh Beckett, citing schedule conflicts, and there’s no official word on whether Rinko Kikuchi will return as Mako Mori. Del Toro, however, was coy in hinting at Kikuchi’s possible return for the sequel.
Spaeny is a relative unknown, with only the indie film Counting to 1,000 on her list of credits. She currently is promoting a new single on iTunes.
