The RED action comedy movie series, revolving around “retired” spies, is being developed by NBC into an hour-long TV series.

The films’ creative team, Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, and Mark Vahradian, is the force behind the TV adaptation. The Hoeber brothers wrote both the 2010 film hit and the 2013 sequel, while di Bonaventura and Vahradian produced both movies.

While the TV show will be based on the movies, the movies were inspired by the limited comic book series of the same name, created by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner and published by the DC Comics/Wildstorm imprint Homage. Each medium revolves its plot around a group of REDs – Retired Extremely Dangerous operatives – who return to action.

The TV series version will keep the core concept of the films since it’s being written by the Hoeber brothers, but it will reportedly be set in a more authentic world. According to Deadline, it will focus more on the characters’ “darkly hilarious struggles to survive civilian life as they simultaneously fight for and against the very organization that threw them out.”
