The Geekly with a Twist: May 18th-24th

Finally! It’s FRIDAY! Tonight I finally get to see The Avengers (I realize I’m a slacker) and you all get your favorite article of the week. Yup, that’s right, it’s time for the Geekly! So, onward with the history!

May 19th, 1999: The first Star Wars movie in 16 years (and the subject of Fanboys…if you haven’t seen it, you NEED to), Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace is released in theaters.

May 19th, 2005: The third in the “new” trilogy, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith is released in theaters.

May 21st, 1921: Andrei Sakharov, the nuclear physicist responsible for the Soviet Union’s “Third Idea” (who became one of the most outspoken humanists of his time), is born in Moscow.

May 21st, 1980: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back is released in theaters.

May 22nd, 1859: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, is born in Edinburgh, Scotland.

May 22nd, 1979: Action star and Priestess in the recent vampire flick (check out Dustin and Molly’s review of Priest here), Maggie Q is born in Honolulu, Hawaii.

May 22nd, 1990: Microsoft releases Windows 3.0.

May 24th, 1686: Physicist and engineer (as well as inventor of two different type of thermometer, Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit is born in Gdańsk (in modern-day Poland).

In honor of the man for whom the temperature scale is named, there is a lovely restaurant out of Ohio which makes a delightful drink called the Fahrenheit Fizz… so why not Twist up your week with a yummy 36 degrees of it!

  • 3 oz gin
  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz Chambord
  • 2 tsp powdered sugar
  • 1 oz chilled champagne (other sparklers will do, I’d suggest by taste but nothing sweeter than Extra Dry)

Mix all ingredients less the champagne in a shaker with ice. Strain into a glass and top with the champagne. Garnish with a lemon twist and a thermometer for extra fun!

Speaking of Garnishes, what better way to finish off your week than with a bit of planning for weekends to come?

SciFi4Me partners with many conventions in order to bring you the best content from around the globe. So far this year we’ve already hit our home convention of Planet Comicon, South by Southwest, and more. We’re also getting ready for an especially busy summer. For a fairly complete list of conventions, check out our convention page. For convention coverage, be sure to check back on here, on our Youtube page.

In addition, if you don’t have plans for Father’s Day weekend, you’ve not looked very far! Denver Comic Con, Contamination in St. Louis, and Soonercon in Oklahoma City will be taking place, to name three close to home base here (Special shoutout to the folks at Soonercon who are especially nice!).

As the song says, “if you’re bored then you’re boring.” There’s almost too much to do!

So, until next week, geek on!
