The latest casting news for A Wrinkle in Time: director Ava DuVernay has found her Meg Murry. Storm Reid (Twelve Years a SlaveAmerican Girl: Lea to the Rescue) has nabbed the role in what The Hollywood Reporter calls “a nod to the diversity of the modern world”, as the rest of the lead cast will be of mixed race as well.

headshot_stormreidMeg finds herself on an intergalactic journey with her younger brother and a classmate, encountering three supernatural beings — Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling), and Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey) — in the search for her father, who mysteriously disappears after researching the tesseract.

A Wrinkle in Time, written by Madeleine L’Engle, was first published in 1963. It won a Newberry Award, the Sequoyah Book Award, and the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award. The first of five books in a series, the story was a challenge for L’Engle to get published, collecting rejections from at least twenty-six publishers between the book’s completion in 1960 and its eventual publication by Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

L’Engle incorporated elements of her Christian faith in the stories, very much like C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien did with their tales. She spent time as the official writer-in-residence at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, and the books reflect the theme of good fighting evil, quoting from the Gospel of John.

The book ranks on the National Education Association’s “Teachers’ Top 100 Books for Children” and has been adapted for television, the stage (as both play and opera), and graphic novel.
