NIGHT OF THE COMET Gets Remake Plan at Orion
Deadline is reporting that Orion Pictures has tapped Roxanne Benjamin (Southbound, XX, V/H/S) to write a reboot of the cult classic Night of the Comet.
The 1984 original starred Catherine Mary Stewart, Kelli Maroney, and Robert Beltran as survivors of a holocaust that came with the arrival of a comet that passes near Earth, turning everyone into dust or zombies. The film, penned by Thom Eberhardt, is cited by Joss Whedon as an influence on the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Launched in 1978, Orion Pictures was revived in 2017 by MGM, and has a storied (and mixed) history as the home for The Terminator, RoboCop, The Silence of the Lambs, and Dances with Wolves before declaring bankruptcy in 2013. The new shingle is headed up by John Hegeman, the former president of Blumhouse Tilt. Upcoming releases include The Prodigy and Anna and the Apocalypse.
No word on whether the reboot will be horror-comedy like the original or take a darker turn into full-blown horror.
