BEYOND Surprised with Renewal for a Second Season

It’s been just over a week since Freeform’s newest series Beyond premiered, and already there’s been a big announcement about its future. The show, which aired its first two episodes on January 2 and simultaneously released the entire first season for bingeing, has been renewed for a second season. Freeform’s president, Tom Ascheim, surprised cast and fans alike when he announced the renewal at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour on January 10.

Ratings show that 1.5 million viewers watched the premiere within three days of it airing, making it the biggest series launch for the network in a year. The total reach for the season in the first week is 14 million people, according to the network. The debut and binge-worthy release of Beyond, coupled with the season 2 premiere of Shadowhunters on the same day, gave Freeform its best week on digital platforms in over four years.

The cast and executive producers were on stage during their press panel discussing the prospect of a second season when Ascheim hopped up to spill the beans. “Our goal for launching Beyond was to give the audience outstanding content in the way they want to watch it,” said Ascheim. “The response has far exceeded our greatest expectations, both quantitatively and qualitatively, and we can’t wait to bring more Beyond to its growing fan base.”

Beyond is about Holden (played by Duffield), a man who wakes up after a 12-year coma to find his whole world has changed. Not only does he have supernatural abilities now, he is also caught in the middle of a cryptic conspiracy with a mysterious woman.

Beyond is currently airing on Mondays at 9/8c and is available for bingeing on the Freeform app and site. You can check out our review of the first season here.

Kayce Taylor

Kayce Taylor nurtured a healthy love of video games from an early age. Growing up in small-town Missouri offered plenty of free time to play the likes of Kirby, Mario (of all varieties), 007, and more. Though she was raised in a Star Wars family, her husband showed her the undeniable power of Star Trek, and she's been a fan of both ever since. If she were only allowed to watch one show for the rest of her life, she would pick The Office without hesitation. She recently began exploring photography, and even more recently went to her first comicon. She loves sci-fi/fantasy and dreams of going to Hogwarts and/or meeting a Shadowhunter.
