The Geekly with a Twist: September 30th-October 6th

Hey all…Annaleigh back again with your Geekly.  I’m a squee-ing zombie today, so don’t mind me too much (I just caught up on the last two episodes of The Guild last night and then proceeded to spend most of the night falling out of bed trying to sleep)…onward with the history!

Mmmmmm...radioactivity.

September 30th, 1999: Due to supposed human negligence, an uncontrolled nuclear chain reaction is set off at a nuclear facility in Tokaimura, Japan.  (I wonder if one of them was trying to gain superpowers…hmmm…)

October 1st, 1930: Richard Harris, the man whose last role in life was the benevolent Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore (but it is to his credit that we remember him in such amazing roles as King Arthur), is born in Limerick City in what is now simply called Ireland.

October 1st, 1968: “Night of the Living Dead” premieres in Pittsburgh.  Despite its establishment of George A Romero as the man for zombies, the word “zombie” is actually never uttered in the original film which spawned the rest of the Dead films.

October 2nd, 1836: After 5 years away in which he acquired knowledge around the world of everything from wildlife to geology, Charles Darwin returns home to England.

October 2nd, 1959: “The Twilight Zone” debuts on CBS.  It would run for 5 years and spawn two remakes (in 1985 and 2002) as well as make a permanent stamp on popular culture.

October 4th, 1915: The Dinosaur National Monument is established in an area in the Uinta Mountains (rawr!).  It would later be expanded from an 80-acre area to a 200,000-acre area in 1938.

October 4th, 1957: Sputnik I is launched into orbit by the Soviet Union.  The first manmade satellite in space, it was slightly smaller than a basketball and weighed 184 lbs.

October 4th, 1967: Whereas I know we all want to forget about X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the guy who would later play an awesome Sabretooh- Liev Schreiber- is born in San Francisco.  (Hey, the acting sure as heck wasn’t the problem with that movie.)

October 4th, 2004: The Ansari X Prize of $10 million is awarded to Mojave Aerospace Ventures.  The prize was awarded afer MAV’s SpaceShipOne became the first privately built and manned rocket ship to fly in space twice within a two-week time frame.

October 5th, 1882: The man who would later become the “Father of the Space Age,” Robert H. Goddard, is born in Worcester, Massachusetts.

October 5th, 1969: “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” premieres on BBC television.

October 5th, 1998: The US pays Russia $60 million for research time on the ISS to try to keep the Russian space agency from going under.  Considering the current state of the US space program, this was a heck of a move.  (Does NASA employ psychics?!?)

This week’s Twist is another throwback to one of my first articles here on SciFi4Me…my version of a Zombie: The Romero.

Fill a tall glass with ice.
In a shaker, add:
1 oz Spiced Rum (Captain Morgan is The Lush’s good friend)
1 oz Kraken Black Spiced Rum
1/2 oz Apricot Brandy
Dash of Grenadine
2 oz Orange Juice
2 oz Pineapple Juice
Shake and strain into prepared glass.  Top with 1/2 oz of 151-proof rum (optional).

And, of course, finally, Annaleigh’s Find of the Week.

I’ve been drinking Jones Soda since it was a major novelty in high school.  The cool thing is not the soda company itself…but rather the new Limited Editions!

WANT!

They’ve got The Guild, Dungeons and Dragons, and Buffy to name a few and, with Christmas coming up these are fun novelty presents for the collector in your life (and this writer certainly accepts presents! 😉 ).
