Nimoy Tweets He Has COPD
After recently being photographed in a wheelchair and wearing an oxygen mask, Leonard Nimoy took to Twitter to explain his current medical condition. “I quit smoking 30 years ago. Not soon enough. I have COPD. Grandpa says, quit now!! LLAP [Live Long and Prosper].”
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD, is the name for the collection of lung diseases that makes it increasingly difficult to breathe. Bronchitis and emphysema are the main forms of the progressive disease and can lead to respiratory failure and even lung cancer.
Despite his recent frail appearance, Nimoy has been busy with numerous work projects. In 2012 he finished a stint on Fringe as Dr. William Bell as well as his return to the big screen last year as Spock in Star Trek: Into Darkness. He retired from attending Star Trek conventions three years ago but continues to reach out to his fans and supporters, urging them to tune into the upcoming show marathon. In fact, Nimoy shared with his legions of Twitter fans that he just completed his latest project. He shared, “Just taped my comments for Star Trek Fest to be aired on EPIX Feb. 16th. Still enjoying my life. LLAP.”
But Nimoy also urges his followers to cease their smoking habits immediately. “Smokers, please understand. If you quit after you’re diagnosed with lung damage it’s too late. Grandpa says learn my lesson. Quit now,” he posted.
The 82-year-old added, “I’m doing OK. Just can’t walk distances. Love my life, family, friends and followers. LLAP.”
