Hey, DAVID GERROLD, When Are You Gonna Finish…?

Besides being the creator of the tribbles (which, for a time, were originally called “furries”), and besides being the guy who pulled “Land of the Lost” together (no, not that one. The real one.), and besides being the author of an autobiographical book-turned-John Cusack-starring-movie The Martian Child, author and screenwriter David Gerrold gets asked more about a series of novels that some worry he may never finish.

The War Against the Chtorr (pronounced “TOR”) is a series of novels in which Earth has been invaded by aliens. And so far, he’s got four books in the set: A Matter for Men (1983), A Day for Damnation (1985), A Rage for Revenge (1989), and A Season for Slaughter (1993).

Notice those publication dates. The next book is called A Method of Madness, and Gerrold himself finally answers that burning question:

  • I still dont think he answered the question as to WHEN!

    • Well, he did say he’s in the polishing stage, so I would expect a manuscript to be delivered to the publisher within the next 3-6 months.

    • I worked on Hidden Frontier, and still work at HF Productions as we ctuoinne with the Ro Nevin character Bobby Rice played (though now played by Brandon McConnell) in the spin-off, Star Trek: Odyssey.HF had guys kissing guys long before Phase II. James Cawley’s series is great, BTW, but just want to clarify that what Phase II is doing really started on Hidden Frontier. Thanks

  • There’s a sucker born every minute. ain’t gonna happen. Empty promise number one billion.

He’s just tired of answering the questions, has no intention of finishing it, and is milking it (and you) for other things he’s more invested it. He’s ATTACHED to it, but it’s been “poised” to be done for decades. Seen the “I’ll get it done before Obama’s 2nd term is over” promise?

    Yeah, right. I thought so.

Even Jordan’s estate finished the Wheel of Time series. So, maybe some year I’ll see it as a failed cut-out or remainder in a charity sale. However, I have no such expectations for this one and, frankly, have stopped caring much at all. I used to check every month, then every few months, then once or twice a year. Now, maybe once a year. Soon, not at all.

Thanks for the story, DG and good luck to you. Good stuff, for it’s time. Now?…Meh. I’m tired of all the blatant manipulation, screed, and empty promises.

    • On November 8, he posted on his Facebook a bit about having an epiphany in his car that changed the direction of a particular chapter. The mention of “Jim” as the protagonist would seem to indicate that he’s working on this. We’re hoping to check in for a follow-up sometime soon.

  • Well, the very best of luck with that. But that’s probably just a polite way of keeping you at arm’s length in the interview when you asked a question that ALWAYS seems to come up. There’s always a “reason”. Really, best advice is to look elsewhere for now (and remember to glance at the cut-outs on the way out of the store, just in case). Maybe he’ll actually finish it and NOT pull a “Jordan”. I wouldn’t bet on it though.

  • Ya, we’re never going to see it…last I saw, TOR books was supposed to do it. I’ve tried to contact them many times and never get a response….they may have given up also. Great series, it’s just a shame Mr. Gerrold can’t deliver on all of the empty promises he’s made to complete this series.
