Three years in the future we are greeted with a frantic phone call from Stefan to Tyler.  Tyler Lockwood is a werewolf and apparently wears suits in the future and has a car with Bluetooth. Stefan asks Tyler if he has talked to Caroline and Tyler says he hasn’t and he doesn’t want to get wrapped up in Stefan and Caroline’s drama.  Stefan tells him to call her and warn her that she should run.  All this running has to do with that mysterious x-shaped wound on Stefan’s chest; he says it’s opened up (it’s oozing and needs some antibiotic ointment for sure).  What is this mark? Is it a mystical tracking device?  A bio-hazardous magical spell?

Also, he pours gasoline all over his 1963 Porsche 356B Karmann Coupe, and blows it up, which I was fine with because I was never impressed with it anyway…it was just so tiny and dumb looking.  I mean, it’s no 1967 Chevy Impala, police model (am I right SPN fans?).

Present day Bonnie is writing in her diary to Elena about nothing really, when she gets a migraine full of those creepy torturous images.  No thanks to that pesky Phoenix Stone that Alaric was supposed to throw out.  Speaking of Alaric, his new roommate Damon is just meandering about in a towel and complaining about the squalor in which Alaric lives. Damon lets us know that Matt has been investigating his mom, Lilly’s, cellphone records.  We also noticed you noticing that rock Alaric hid in his pocket, Damon.  Bonnie drops by all Kimmy Gibler like and asks Alaric if he destroyed that stone because she had those crippling visions accompanied by blackout again, and Alaric bold-faced lies! Damon chimes, “Who wants to go to Myrtle Beach?”

Caroline is being held captive in Stefan’s room, reading his diary from 1863.  She asks him who “Valerie Tull” is, but he doesn’t disclose.  Stefan catches Lilly trying to parallel park; yes, that happened.  He tells her, that he is not talking to Damon (Lilly is dumb)  and she lets him know that she sent Valerie to him in 1863.  Valerie lets her captive Caroline know, that it was she who was Stefan’s first love!  Flashback episode!  yay…

Look at Valerie’s face, it’s like she wants people to know she’s angry at the world.

Lilly was going to go to Europe with her bea Julian in 1863, but she first had to make sure her children were okay, so she sent members of her witch/vampire family to check on them.  These flashbacks were grueling, with the sepia and the wigs and the fake eyelashes.  Julian is a punk who didn’t like Valerie getting so close and being so nice to Stefan.  In this day Valerie was just a witch, a witch who had to keep her magic in an amulet.  Valerie is smitten with Stefan and he her, and they smooch and she touches his 1863 wig and they…well you know…it.

Valerie and Stefan share stories and feelings in July 1863 and Julian does everything he can to keep them from being together.  Valerie sends Stefan a telegram to meet him and they can run away together.  Julian stops Valerie, and we discover that Valerie is pregnant with Stefan’s baby.  Julian beats Valerie causing her to lose the child, puts her on the ship to England and Lilly heals her with her blood.  Valerie did not want to live under Julian’s thumb and OD’s on Laudanum in the tub, but she awakens as the first heretic.

The Scooby Gang is heading to Myrtle Beach to catch up with the lost heretic in Lilly’s family.  They find him, drunk and kinda funny and charming.  He’s also met Damon before but Damon doesn’t recall.  Bonnie wants this power sucking heretic to take away her visions.  He seems like a decent guy so he does it, but he sees what she sees.  He panics and asks right away, “Where is the phoenix stone?” He turns distrustful real quick, kicks their butts and takes off…with the stone.  Bonnie is not okay with Alaric lying and Damon refuses to get mixed up with that drama. They catch up with this guy (whose name I didn’t hear, or they haven’t said), he tells Damon that he met him in 1863, he was sent by Lilly.  He talked Damon into deserting the war then, resulting in Damon missing the battle of Gettysburg and saving his life and/or limb.  After their sharing session, they have a mini battle and get the stone back.   Bonnie hands Alaric the stone and tells him to never lie to her again.  Damon smiles and says “Awww, my besties are buds again.”

Kat Graham as Bonnie is everything to me these days, I love this woman.

Caroline talks to Lilly about how Stefan grieved for her growing up, after she was hauled off to a sanatorium for TB patients when he was 10, and that he loved her.  Lilly sets Caroline free.

Damon is holding OSCAR! his name is Oscar hostage, in a vervain coma.  Damon calls Lilly to tell her, and she makes her eyes real wide. Damon declares that he is over her and her new family because he realized (looking at Alaric and Bonnie) that he has his own family to look after.

Caroline and Stefan meet, but they can’t touch, due to the spell Valerie placed on Caroline.  They talk softly to each other by a warm crackling fire, and things seem like they’re going to be okay, for now.

Bonnie tries to tell Alaric that trying to bring Jo back is wrong and it’s technically, probably….necromancy.  They try to research the stone, but they find nothing.  They go to the morgue, have a heart to heart over a corpse and Bonnie says she will try to help Alaric bring Jo back.

You know that friend that drives you crazy and has actually treated you like crap but you love them and keep them around, that is Damon to Alaric and Bonnie.

Valerie is standing over Oscar, she located him with magic, so easy right?  Valerie is not about to have Julian coming back around.  Oscar had been sent to find him, and he did find Julian, months ago.  Oscar just wasn’t ready to go back to Lilly anytime soon, but he was still on the fence.  Valerie crushes Oscar’s heart…and mine too. Dang.

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays at 8/7c on The CW

Molly Montgomery

Molly Montgomery was introduced to genre film by her dad as a kid -- if it was "Forbidden Planet" or Tod Browning's "Freaks", she can't remember which was first. She began her love affair with Vampires at age 11, and at age 12 she stopped sunbathing. A background in theater, filmmaking and sitting on her tush makes her a fairly knowledgeable nerd.
