The Geekly with a Twist: September 7th-13th

Hey everyone! Yes, I’m back from Barsoom…sadly. I’ve been back less than a week and I really miss it. I know I owe you all some tales and fun details about the trip, but first I must provide you with what you’ve surely come here for…THE GEEKLY! So, onward with the history!

August 7th, 1955: Mira Furlan, the actress under the makeup of Delenn (Babylon 5), is born in Zagreb in what is modern-day Croatia (at the time, it was part of Yugoslavia).

August 8th, 1971: Arthur Dent, or Bilbo Baggins, himself- the hilarious Martin Freeman is born in Aldershot, Hampshire, England.

August 9th, 1954; Jeffrey Combs, a man of multiple roles of Star Trek universe fame, is born in Oxnard, California.

August 9th, 1999: The Sega Dreamcast is launched in North America.

August 10th, 1935: The youngest person to fly in space, and also the first person to spend more than a day in space, the first to sleep in space, the first to suffer from space sickness, and the first to take a manual photograph in space, cosmonaut Gherman Titov is born in the village of Verkhneye Zhilino in the Soviet Union.

August 10th, 1941: Gunpei Yokoi, the creator of the Game Boy itself, is born in Kyoto, Japan.

August 10th, 2008: CERN powers up the Large Hadron Collider. Contrary to popular theories, the world does not implode.

August 11th, 1897: Irène Joliot-Curie, the daughter of Marie and Pierre and a Nobel Prize recipient for her work in chemistry, is born in Paris, France.

August 12th, 1997: The Mars Global Surveyor inserts into the orbit of the Red Planet.

For other things that have happened this week in geek, check out:

For your Twist, how about something from one of the best games for the Game Boy? A Mudkipmay not be an original Pokemon, but it sounds refreshing! (Special thanks to The Drunken Moogle.)

  • 1 oz orange juice
  • 1 oz blue curacao
  • 2 oz white wine (Sauvignon Blanc works great with the citrus)
  • Citrus soda such as grapefruit, orange, or lemon-lime

Shake the first three ingredients and pour into a highball glass. Top with your citrus soda and enjoy!

Orange slices make great garnishes for your Twist, but for your Geekly‘s Garnish, we need something a little more… completely. awesome.

SkyMall has a voice-activated R2D2 that I need to save up for…it’s only $200! Hey, my birthday and that weird winter holiday are around the corner!

So, until next week, geek on!

  • Once again you send me to the liquor store (for blue curacao, of course). 😀

I LOVE the idea of a voice-activated R2-D2, but only if it is able to carry a tray of alcoholic beverages to me AND do my laundry. 😉
