The Geekly with a Twist: July 6th-12th+Anniversary GIVEAWAY!

Hey everyone! Today marks a HUGE milestone for me here on The Geeky and I’m super excited to announce July 8th marks my one year anniversary of this column and this very post marks my 100th post! So you know what I’m going to do? Celebrate of course! Stick around for the end of the post for some news on a giveaway but, until then, onward with the history!

July 6th, 1951: A man known to younger audiences as the villainous Captain Barbossa (and so much more for older audiences), Geoffrey Rush is born in Toowoomba, Queensland (Australia, in case you were thinking something else).

July 8th, 1978: Gwen Cooper in Torchwood, the beautiful Eve Myles is born in Ystradgynlais. (No, I don’t want to try pronounce it…it’s Welsh. The language is confusing.)

July 8th, 2011: The Space Shuttle Atlantis launches from the Kennedy Space Center on the final mission of the U.S. Space Shuttle program.

July 10th, 1925: The Scopes “Monkey” Trial begins in Dayton, Tennessee. The court case is famous for being the first time evolution was raised as a topic involving public education.

July 10th, 1945: Brilliant actor and voice actor (you might recognize him best either from his role as “Book” from Firefly or as Garth from Fable II), Ron Glass is born in Evansville, Indiana.

July 11th, 1801: The French astronomer Jean-Louis Pons makes his first discovery of a comet. He would later go on to discover more comets than any other single person in history.

July 12th, 1973: Lon Chaney, Jr., the second-generation actor famous for roles such as the Wolf Man, dies in San Clemente, California.

July 12th, 1978: A beautiful actress who dies much too often in her roles, Michelle Rodriguez is born in San Antonio, Texas.

So, in honor of the occasion, how about a Geekly? (Pictures to come after some celebrating with the drink tonight)

  • 2 oz raspberry vodka (clear, but flavored)
  • Mountain Dew or other citrus based caffeinated soda
  • 1 lime

Cut the lime into slices. Rim a highball glass with colored sugar by applying lime juice to the edge and rolling the glass in the sugar. Squeeze the remainder of one slice of lime into the bottom of the glass. Add the raspberry vodka and top with soda. Stir with a stir stick and garnish with floating lime “alien” heads and mini glow sticks for a sci-fi treat!

Okay, so, instead of your typical Garnish this week, we’re going to wrap it up with a giveaway! Okay, so I don’t have pictures of the stuff yet, but it’s schwag!

You’ll win the special, one-of-a-kind Geekly with a Twist Anniversary Package. This package includes:

  • a framed copy of any of your favorite Geekly Cocktails over the past year (check out old Geeklys via our archive) autographed by yours truly
  • a one-of-a-kind SciFi4Me glass to correspond to your favoriteTwist(it could be a cocktail glass, a highball glass, et cetera)
  • the Non-alcholic ingredients to your favoriteTwist
  • a random poster, action figure or comic from my personal collection
  •  Maybe more? Who knows!

And, if you’re the winner and you live within 50 miles of HQ (Kansas City, MO) you might get an extra special visit…and not from extraterrestrials.

So, of course, I’m sure you’re asking, how do I enter this lovely contest?

Of course, before I wrap things up, I just want to say thank you to you all. Thank you for making this column something I can do every week and thank you for giving me something fun and geeky to keep up on. I’ve got a more extended thank you on my recent fun rant about why being a geek rocks and I’d love it if you checked that out, too.

So, until next week, GEEK ON!
